Your skills and experience from any branch of service may transfer to the Guard.


  • Age – Must qualify for non-regular retired pay by age 60.
  • Physical – Must meet height/weight and current medical requirements.
  • Education – Must meet education standards for the MOS or option for which you are enlisting.
  • Background – Must have most current DD 214, NGB22 or discharge order and have an approved DD Form 368 Conditional Release.


  • Prior Service members from all branches could be required to attend a 6-week Basic Combat Training (BCT) course at Fort Leonard Wood depending on the length of their break in service. For more information regarding if you will be required to attend a 6-week Basic Training you will need to speak with your Recruiter.
  • ASVAB – Applicants with a break in service of over 10 years must re-take the ASVAB to establish current scores.

Enlisted Army Soldiers and officers may qualify for Military Service Obligation reductions and up to two years of stabilization (certain states may offer more). Officers must have no adverse actions against you (e.g., Conduct Unbecoming or an Officer or two-time Non-Select).

  • Enlisted Soldiers – Work with a Reserve Component Career Counselor (RCCC) up to 180 days prior to your separation date for a smooth transition with no break in service.
  • Officers – Talk to a Silver Siege Reserve Component transition officer up to one year prior to your date of separation for a smooth transition with no break in service.

Prior Service Enlistment Bonus

The Enlisted Affiliation Bonus is offered to current enlisted service members who affiliate directly into a critical vacancy in the Army National Guard from the Active Army.

The Officer Affiliation Bonus (OAFB) is offered to officers and warrant officers who are currently on Active Duty and who agree to affiliate into the Army National Guard into a critical skill position.

Available to current Army National Guard Soldiers who volunteer to retrain into a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) that the Guard has identified as having a shortage of trained and qualified personnel.

Officer Accession Bonus
The Officer Accession Bonus (OAB) is offered to newly commissioned officers and newly appointed warrant officers who serve in a traditional status in the Army National Guard. If you're a current Guard enlisted Soldier who has never before held any commission as an officer or appointment as a warrant officer, and are accepting a commission or appointment into a critical skill position, you may qualify.
