The South Carolina Army National Guard's Soldiers have been well trained and ready since their beginning as the Charleston Artillery Company. The Guard's "Palmetto Regiment," considered one of the Army's best volunteer units during the Mexican-American War, gave way to the state's nickname: the "Palmetto State." In WWI, most South Carolina Guard units were assigned to the 30th Division, with 12 members earning the Congressional Medal of Honor.
