Thread: Running newbie

    Hi im 19 and seriously thinking about enlisting. Have been for a while and no im getting ready to do it. I can do the pushups and the situps no problem but my running is WEAK. on the tread milli can do 1 mile in a bout 8 minutes but the long distance blows. If i try to pace my self my calf muscles hurt more from jogging then do from flat out running. Any suggestions. Also im in the minneapolis mn area and would love some motivation or company running.

    I am not too good at running myself, but the best thing I can suggest is pacing yourself, and getting off of that treadmill because treadmills dont help much. You need to strech before you run and after you run. If your going to go to the guard, as we all on here intend on doing, you need to be in good physical shape and be able to have alot of running, because in the RSP program that trains you before you go to BCT you run everywhere, there is not allowed any running at all.

    Default just keep running

    the improvement will come naturally. running on a treadmill is like running on a track, i.e., you keep going in circles and it feels like you are getting nowhere thus it begins to play tricks on your mind.

    try to mix it up from time to time. one day run all out for the one mile that you go. next day set your goal for something like 30 minutes or a time that you know you can meet. day after that, run sprint pyramids, 100m sprint, walk 100m, 200m sprint, walk 200m, 400m sprint, walk 400m, 800m sprint walk 400m, and back down.....

    throw in some extra cardio too like 45 min to an hour on the bike, stepper, or elliptical on your non-run days.

    try doing 50-100 crunches, get up and jog for 90 secs., and repeat this until you get to about 500 crunches. It'll make you sweat.

    stay hydrated and don't forget your rest days.

    these are just some tips that have helped me.

    well, i too live in the minneapolis area and what i do is lets say one day run 2 mil. and then the next day run 2 1/2 ect. that way you body gets used to running long distance. good luck!

    yeah just to day i finished meps my ship date is sept 21 to ft knox....i scored a 92 on my asvab and later found out im color blind...lol yeah so now im a helicopter flight ops specalist...whoopie but if anyone is in the minneapolis area and looking for a running partner let me know

    i dont ever feel as good when i run on a tredmill then when I actually get out and run...
    suggestion to those who get the runners cramps..
    when you breath (this is what works for me)
    in through your nose... and then "whoo whoo" through your mouth fast...

    hi, could you please explain what the RSP is and how long does this last?
    before BCT .
    and can you wear a knee brace ? for the running?, is that allowed. it would be just an over the counter strecth one.
    just curious
