Question From Navy - Guard & Deployment Questions

Did some digging here, and I have not found exactly what I'm looking for, but I would like peoples opinions on what MOS would be good for me and would also like to know if I would be able to transfer my rank to the new service.

    - 9 years active navy
    - E-5 (5 1/2 years in rank), assuming I dont make E-6 on next cycle before getting out
    - Currently a Submarine Missile Technician
    - Hold a Top Secret clearance
    - Will be in Austin, TX
    - Good with Computers and Networks, this is the field I will be in as a civilian and would not mind keeping with that field, but not required.
    - Would like a MINIMAL chance of being deployed overseas

I have a family / 3 kids to take care of... Getting deployed is something that I have done enough of and although I understand that it is possible, I would really like to minimize the chance of going overseas (US desaster relief type stuff I would have no issues with at all).

    Thanks
    MT2(SS), USN

I would suggest that you contact the units in the Austin area and see what MOS's they have open. Based on what I'm seeing on the TX Guard page, there are plenty of Army Guard units in the Austin area to include aviation, MP, CID, Finance and others.

... besides the TOP 10 MOS's... here's the Critical List that is at the bottom of the Texas page. The TOP 10 and those shown below come with a $20,000 bonus.

    Here's that link:

    http://1800goguard.com/TX/index.php

    MOS TITLE
    11C INDIRECT FIRE INFANTRYMAN
13C TACTICAL AUTOMATED FIRE CONTROL SYSTEMS SPECIALIST
    13E CANNON FIRE DIRECTION SPECIALIST
    13F FIRE SUPPORT SPECIALIST
    15Q AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL OPERATOR
    15T UH-60 HELICOPTER REPAIRER
    15V OBSERVATION/SCOUT HELICOPTER REPAIRER (RC)
    21E HEAVY CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
    25C RADIO OPERATOR-MAINTAINER
    25F NETWORK SWITCHING SYSTEMS OPERATOR-MAINTAINER
    25Q MULTICHANNEL TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS OPERATOR-MAINTAINER
    31D CID SPECIAL AGENT
    31E INTERNMENT/RESETTLEMENT SPECIALIST
    52C UTILITIES EQUIPMENT REPAIRER
    52D POWER-GENERATION EQUIPMENT REPAIRER
    63D ARTILLERY MECHANIC
    92F PETROLEUM SUPPLY SPECIALIST
94E RADIO AND COMMUNICATIONS SECURITY (COMSEC) REPAIRER
    96B INTELLIGENCE ANALYST
    96R GROUND SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS OPERATOR

As far as an MOS that would sorta, maybe, almost be similiar to your Navy Rating... I'd hazard a guess and say that because the Army did away with their Pershing, Hawk, and Chaparral missiles long ago... the closest you might come to it would be in the Air Defense Artillery branch... aka Duckhunters. Here's the LIST (not sure if there are Patriot batteries in the Austin area TX Guard but you can ask the recruiter)

At any rate... I'm sure that with your background and experience... you'd be an asset to whatever unit you signup with... and that they'd be glad to have you.

You may also want to check with the Naval Reserve... there is a Navy-Marine Corps Reserve Center in Austin.

One of the recruiters here may be able to answer this for reasonably certain... here's the info I have available:

Would definately be interested and will look into more information on the 25F, 25Q, and 94E .. Also would have some interest in 15Q from that list..

Anyone in those jobs have any opinion on them? How would you all rank those jobs when it comes to the probability of a deployment overseas vs. other jobs?

I doubt that your deployment concerns (unless you volunteer to go with another unit that is deploying) will have so much bearing on which MOS you choose... as to which unit you join.

Please bear in mind... that with the Guard... you are joining a particular unit to fill a particular opening aka "slot".

When you're Active Duty... you get trained in your MOS and then can be sent to ANY unit that needs to fill a "slot" for that MOS.

Maybe they've just come back... or have never been activated... you probably won't know until you check with the units in Austin.

Who's to say that one might join a Finance unit as a 44C or a 92G... with the thought that they probably wouldn't get deployed... after all... we're FINANCE!!! Well... dem troops in Iraq need to get paid just the same as the rest!

Think of it like this... you could be a MT on the USS Hue City... but if it's laid up in dry dock for 6 months... a Coastie BM on a large cutter *might* have a higher chance of being deployed... YOU JUST NEVER KNOW... (but you already know that!)

Here's some links for you... btw... the MOS numbers have recently been changed for many MOS's... 25F, 25Q, 94E, 15Q are the current-correct ones now... go by the names on these pages:

Yeah, If I were a stinkin' missile tech, I'd join ANYTHING else to get away!

    A-GANG all the way!

Sorry, I just don't see many bubbleheads in here. BTW, I wonder if they let us wear our fish on the greens!

I was A-gang on USS Nevada (SSBN-733) Gold.

Started out as a missile tech, though. Can't blame you for wanting to get out of that.

I asked my recruiter if I could wear my fish, he said "dont make me hit you", lol.

When I was in the guard, they made me wear my fish. I still don't know if you are supposed to or not, but it was their idea and not mine. I had them sewn on my BDUs per their instructions as well. I researched it and could find nothing saying I should wear them, but nothing that said I could not either. So I wore them for 2 yrs in the guard, and with all the generals and sgms I came into contact with not one said it was wrong, they usually looked at it like it was something interesting. I had one 3 star ask me if I could make up my mind what branch of service I was in, but he just thought it was funny. I thought it was kind of weird myself, wearing fish on an army uniform...
