The asvab is the written test required for any branch of service. It is a three hour test that measures your aptitude to do a certain type of job. There are 9 sections, that measure everything from math to mechanics, english to electronics. You will receive a score that will tell you if you're qualified to join a branch of service, and a breakdown of what your good at.
You can (and should) take the ASVAB as soon as you can if your school offers it. If your school does not offer the ASVAB, you have to be 17 years old, and your recruiter can take to take the test.
