Thread: Refresher training?

    Default Refresher training?

I got out of the service in '92 after Desert storm so it has been a while. I am planning on rejoining the guard reserves in the next couple of months. There seems to be a lot of new gear in the services today and I was wondering if there is a website or something that could help us old soldiers out to get a leg up on some of the new technology. Or is that something I will just have to wait to learn once I rejoin.

Most of the new gear the Army has is just an improved version of the old stuff. For instance, the M-4 is a lightweight, carbine version of the M-16, the Intercepter Body Armor (IBA) is bascially a flack vest with ceramic trauma plates for ballistic protection, the NVGs are better quality, and there are several new night scopes and Close Quarter Combat sights. You will get up to speed quickly.

Once you are back in, you can use both the Army Correspondance Course Program and additional Army Online Learning to help get back up to speed. I had not even considered the changes that had taken place during my 4 and the additional 1 year breaks in service, but believe me once you put the uniform back on everything just seems to fall in place.

Do not stress about being behind a power curve on equipment or training, many things have changed, others have not. Take the time to get reaquainted with being in uniform again, and trust that your prior knowledge gives you a great basis for building upon the new stuff.

My hardest problem coming back in, after the first 4 years break, was remembering how to correctly execute a Column Right/Left when marching a formation... I felt stupid at first, laughed it off and I still have to think before I call it out

You should be fine! Best of luck!
