    Arrow Need to Lose Weight....

I've been wanting to join the Army for a long time. The only thing in my way is... MY WEIGHT

I'm 5'2" tall and I weight 265 lbs. I spoke to a recruiter today, and he said that in order for me to enlist, I need to weigh 139 lbs. I need all the help that I can get. I don't want to be a supermarket cashier for the rest of my life

    Default Been there

I was overweight for years- now I am not. The most important things to remember is that it didn't get there overnight and it won't leave overnight either. Also, weight is not something that happens to you-you do it to yourself. I would suggest you keep a food journal- write down everything you eat - a sandwich - a handful of m & ms- salad & dressing--whatever.
Break it down so you can record how many cals you are taking in on average
(very important DO NOT GET MAD AT YOURSELF FOR WHATEVER YOU ARE TAKING IN)
Then take in less calories (but stay above 1200).
Give up soda and drink water or unsweetened tea.
Excersize- It is amazing what you can slip into a boring work day- I'll do leaning push ups if I'm bored or stretch - And after or before work set up a routine - Can't afford a gym - work out at home - push ups , sit ups, toe touches - get a book from the library to see how to do it right.
Start running or walking (self conscious? stay in and run in place if you have to) Just get moving.
You can do whatever you truly desire- It's your life and you are in control of it.

Ok I don't need to lose that much but my wife is a dietician. So she put together a chart that she works out with her patients.

    first your height=62 convert to cm so it's x 2.56= 159

Next is your age=I don't know your age so I will put in 20

Weight=265 so convert to kg or divide by 2.2= 120.45
    ok now the formula
    Men
(10 x (your weight in kg 120.45))+(6.25 x (your height in cm 159))-(5 x (your age 20))+5 = 2103.25 that is how many calories that you burn a day by just being alive if you are a boy now take that number and x by 1.3 = that is how many calories that you will need to take in a day to maintain your weight.

    Women
    (10 x (your weight in kg 120.45))+(6.25 x (your height in cm 159))-(5 x (your age 20))-161 = 1937.25 now x 1.3 = 2518.45

Now the most you should lose in a week is two pounds I know everyone watches the biggest loser but to be safe and healthy your should only be losing about two pounds a week. Now look around online and you will find charts all over that will tell you how many calories each exercise will burn and decide on how many calories that you want to take in and how much exercise calories you want to burn. I saw the guys post that before me about staying above 1200 I would recommend you stay higher than that.

I weigh about 182 and I'm 5'6" and 33 years old so my calories add up to 1723 and to maintain my weight they add up to 2240. I try to stay at about 1800 calories a day. So by eating less than my body burns I lose about 3600 calories a week or about a pound. But I also exercise and try to burn an additional 600 calories 5 days a week which is about 3000. So I come really close to burning two pounds a week.

This is not an exact thing but it will give you something to work with but also remember that you will be gaining muscle so you may at first go up a little but over time it will pay off and you will see results.

I hope everyone can make sense of that I have been meaning to add this for a while.

Default Here is my 2 cents on this.

You are embarking on somthing more than wieght loss, you are about to change allot of things in your life as you know it. First off, your diet. Cut all the junk food out. Eat as healthy as you can, eat smaller portions. Increase daily activity... (ie running, walking, crunches, anything... work your heart!). This isn't somthing you can do to cut the wieght and then go back to your old ways. You want to make this a change, but as you get used to it you will find that you have a new found energy and abililties. The changes will take time, however if you commit to this and follow through your rewards will be better than you thought. Good luck, you can do this but it will take allot of mental and physical descipline.

I know the feeling. I am 5'3.5" and I weigh 165lbs. I was so close to being able to enlist in the Guard that I could taste it. What stopped me was my body fat % was a few points more than they wanted. I am still trying to get in. I started out weighing 185 and am down to 165. My major problem is that I have a large chest and also since I played a lot of sports in high school I have very muscular legs. I am going to work out as often as I can when summer comes. I am hoping and praying that I lose the body fat and get in. This has been a dream of mine for years. I score high on the ASVAB and all the recruiters want me but none of them have taken the time to help me lose the pounds. Can someone out there help me?

Can relate. I am 5'3" and 154lbs. I've all in all lost 23lbs, yeah I started at 177 . You have to cut out the junk food! You have to exercise! You can't feel sorry for yourselves! About 1.5 months ago I failed the tape, I was 6% over the tape test, I went last tuesday and finally came in slightly under! I now have my date with MEPS . It's gonna take time. I wont even get started on how little I eat cause someone will yell at me. If I don't do it this way, the weight never goes away, so for me this works. I allow myself to drink a small iced coffee every morning after I take my girls to school, skip breakfast and lunch and eat a very small dinner usually. I exercise at night. Ok, you caught me, I opened my mouth when I said I wouldn't lmao.
Just find what works for you. 2 nights in a row i've walked 4 miles. Good luck!
    MEPS on june 22nd 07'...

I'm 22 lbs overweights and I failed the tape by 2%. I workout everday and I lead an active life.

I was able to get qualified by passing something called the arms tests. It was 5 minutes non stop of doing steps on a 16 inch step then pushups.

I can understand your problem.. previously i have been with the same thing...
a dude of mine suggested me to go through this.. it really helped me a lot in loosing weight...and now i am suggesting you to go through... I strongly believe that it will help you...

I have found a great site that sells downloadable "Health & Fitness" audio books by some of the leading Authors in the field. I have recently discovered the benefits of listening to Audio books as I have a 2 hour drive to get to work each day!.

Here is the link directly to their "Health & Fitness" category.

Hope you find the site as useful as I have, if so post back your comments.

I too am overweight and wanting to join the Guard. I've lost 54.5 lbs so far and I have 37.5 to go. It can be done. I workout, mostly cardio, for 2 hours everyday that I possibly can and I limit my calories to around 1400-1600 per day. It takes time and can be slow going sometimes, but it's totally worth it! Just keep trying and hang in there and it'll happen.

Hey man i just wanted to post some encouragement. Losing weight can be tough, but you can do it. Just keep your goals at the font of your mind. Constantly remind yourself that you dont want to be a cashier forever, and use that as motivation to lose the weight and get to where you need to be.

    Good luck and God Bless.

There is no such thing as quick and easy.

Your body will use a reserve energy for the first 3 weeks(roughly 10 pounds). This weight will come off with simple running. However, one big meal will bring it all back. If you get into the 4th week and your still losing weight that means that you are burning fat.

Just do a 2 mile run and time yourself. After a week mix long distance with sprints. Do your 2 mile run with 60 second sprint, 60 second jog.

Lets not fool ourselves here. You KNOW what to do in order to lose weight. You've read ALL the threads. Ready for the solution to all of this? APPLY YOURSELVES! I was in the same boat, I was 177 when I started this, and lost enough to pass the tape test before MEPS. I focused and kept desciplined about it and when I went to MEPS 2 days ago, I weighed in under, so I didn't even NEED to be taped.
Diet & exercise is just common sense. Don't bother with the pills because MEPS may find it in your systems anyways and DQ you. Use your heads, and if you are serious, then you will do this. It's frustrating at times, but just keep in mind you wont be the first or the last to get upset if your weight isn't budging. There's many factors with this, such as muscle gain, and the time of day that you weigh in.
Just don't lose the battle. I've been on more diets than I can count. I restrict myself to under 900 calories a day TOPS, and I walk at least 30 minutes everyday. Maybe once a month I will allow myself a small treat, like a connamon bun, but never candy or ice cream and junk like that, or chips. I eat lots of meat, yogurt, veggies and fruit. I choose the low fat method over atkins. Good luck, just use your brains.

I'm about to be 19, I'm 5'7'' and 200 pounds currently, though if you ask people they'd guess I was only 150-160. According to the charts they say I need to be at 145 pounds. I know this is completely unrealistic for my body type. I have never been a skinny kind of person. My sister, who's been blessed to be thin her whole life (and quite lanky) weighs about 145 (same height as me) and looks as though she's a couple double cheese burgers away from a decent weight to say the least. Personally, I'm not pushing for weight, I'm pushing to make tape. Me and my sister look nothing alike, she's always been the dainty tiny one with long lean muscles and I've never been anywhere near that, I've always had bigger everything compared to her even muscles (which I know weigh more than fat). If I weighed as much as she did I'd probably look sickly whereas it doesn't look quite so bad on her. Don't push to be stickly thin, it's not about that, just do what works with your body. If you are 5'2'' but solid muscle it's possible to be far over the weight limits and way under in body fat. Don't worry so much about the numbers (namely on the scale), just more about getting in better over all shape. Being skinny does nothing for you if you're not physically fit.

I am glad to see the positive efforts that you guys are putting forward to increase your health and physical fitness. By doing so you will change your life style and health. There are many diets and exercise routine that you could use. The main part about losing weight and making the difference is commitment. You have to have to mental awareness that you have to do this in order to reach your goal. Whether its exercise or anything in life. So if your watching Tv remember turn it off and go run or do pushups and situps during the commercials. Another mental challenge is goals. It is great to set goals, it is encouraged. But you have to set goals that are challenging. Doing 20 pushups a day, wont do anything on a PT test. You constantly have to test yourself and give self tests. Administer your own PT test once a month and improve. When you get to basic and go on your runs, and throw up? Its not quit time, its time to go run some more. The body can do much more than limits we place on it. You have to make the commitment to yourself, that you want to change and challenge yourself to do so. Best of luck to each of you and thankyou for your courage to serve.

Ok if you dont eat enough, it wont get you anywhere. You need to make a lifestyle change. I know this because i used to be self-consious of what i ate and i would stay under 10 grams of fat a day and eat 1200 calories or less. I know that was unhealthy but now i am eating healthier and i eat around 1600 calories a day and i lose about 2 pounds a week, so instead of eating less and losing around 7 pounds a week where you are more likely to gain it back with one bad day, i decided to make a lifestyle change. Do weight watchers or watch your caloric intake and write everything down that you eat. The weight will come off with time. Patience and Motivation are 2 key things. Try and find a workout buddy and go jogging and do cardio-- and try out your pushups and situps everyday. I still have a long way to go... but the sooner you start the better

my recruiter gave me a 3 day diet to loose 10lbs. Its good for a quick fix but it's tough to do. You have to love tuna and veggies. I don't have it on me to type in here but you can find it online if you yahoo "chemical 3 day diet" it will come up.

I've started it twice and haven't been able to finish it, but i have lost a total of 9lbs by just trying it.

I suggest you try not to eat too much junk and eat healthier...........well, thats what they all say but it is kind of hard to do that. Junk food tastes so darn good. Start out small and work your way up. Don't try to go cold turkey. Also take a nice brisk walk a few times around the block to get your cardio up, then once you start losing some weight and get more energy, start jogging, then running. good luck!!!!!!!!
