Thread: 09s and deploying?

  1. #1

    Default 09s and deploying?

Ive been thinking about going 09s and my state is deploying in about 6 Months. From what i understand if i am an 09s i am paid as an E-6, but if the OCS class already began and i am waiting and attending drill how does it work for rank? Also would i be able to deploy and at what rank?

    Im also prior service AD.

    Thanks for any insight.

I'm just going to tell you what I've seen (this isn't the Gospel):

    - You will enter as a 09S at whatever rank you previously attained.
    - When you start your Phase 1 OCS (be it traditional or accelerated) you will be 'attached' to OCS and get E-6.
    - You are not 'deployable' per se, for an overseas deployment. However we just had some guys get called up
for a few weeks to help with disaster relief between drills (I actually think they could have declined and they
had to be released from relief orders before drill weekend to go back to OCS. Also these guys WERE ALREADY
MOS Q in their previous enlisted life.

If you are looking to jump from say an E-3 to an E-6 to make a few more $$ for deployment, that ain't happening.

If you want to deploy; deploy; come back and start your OCS journey. Keep us posted.

SCJohnny is correct. The grade E-6 is awarded during your time at OCS. Once you are removed from the course; you are reverted to the last grade that you held.

He's also right in saying you will be non-deployable when you get into OCS until completion. There is a stipulation about the non-deployability, however it's basically for another World War.

You can be deployed in OCS, although very rare.

I thought they changed it so you received E-5 pay as an Officer Candidate, or is it still E-6?

It was E-6, then changed to E-5 and now back to E-6.
