Thread: Conflicts with Civilian Job

    Default Conflicts with Civilian Job

I am starting the academy with the Arizona Department of Corrections this month. I've considered the National Guard in the past and think it might compliment my civilian job. Is it realistic to think I could do both?

I'm a little concerned the guard might interfere with my new civilian job, and am wondering what concessions an employer is required to make for guard basic training and additional time away from work.

I am 27 years old, married with kids and have no military experience, so I'm a little intimidated. I would love to serve my country, and my family is supportive if I chose to do this.

Any thoughts and advice for a newbie would be appreciated.

I'd be willing to bet you'll find several of your co-workers are in the guard. Thats how it is in the prison I work in. DOC will have to give you time off for the military, plus some states will give you paid time. I'm not sure if AZ is one of them. If I were you I'd get done with the academy so you don't have any distractions and then join.

Great advice tanikir... I think you're definitely right about waiting until the academy is over. I thought I'd try to get settled in for a month or 2 at the prison and then look at enlisting.

I believe that AZ DOC gives 1 month paid military leave for every 2 years of DOC service. I think the intention is to cover the yearly 2 week drills. I'd use all of that up during first month of basic training and probably have to take leave without pay for future drills.

    Thanks again for the advice!
