Thread: AD years towards retirement?

    Default AD years towards retirement?

I have 4 years AD and want to know if I go into the guard do I have to only do 16 years or do I have to do 20 years, for my retirement. I understand that I won't receive benefits until I am 60. I am 36 years old and am curious what the mandatory retirement age is in the military. Or do I have nothing to worry about but using my walker to jump out the door.

You would only have to do 16. But you would not be able to collect retirement until you are... i believe it is 64. The only way that you would be able to collect after 20 years of service is to do 20 years total active duty time.
