If you have a JD degree from an accredited institution, and have passed the bar (any state), then you have met the educational requirements for direct appointment as a JAG. If you are not already a commissioned officer, you must be commissioned at age 39 or younger. Speak to your state's Officer Strength Manager, who will work with you to complete the application.

Contact MAJ Matthew A. Ritchie at mathew.ritchie@us.army.mil to get the best info possible regarding service as an officer with the VAARNG. He is the, or one of VA's region OSM, I'm not quite sure, but no one in this forum would be able to provide better information regarding VA Guard as an officer as he would.Originally Posted by jdbison

Does anyone have similar information for Kentucky Guard?
How much time is initially required away from my practice for training?
Try 1LT Stephen Martin at (502) 472-9068 for KYARNG.Originally Posted by MLC JD
You'll need to complete the Basic Officer Leader's Course Common Core, as well as the JAG Officer Basic Course. You can split them up, but I recommend going to one right after the other, and get it over with. Each one is about 10 weeks.
