just wondering if your family comes to basic do you actually get to spend more than an hour with them? do you get a few days before you ship to AIT ???

i am guessing it all depends and everyone is different, but isn't AIT a lil more laid back? you get a computer and can use your cell whenever you aren't training?

I think it just depends on when your AIT is scheduled to start.

AIT goes in phases, so when you're in the first phase(red phase, I think) you may not be able to have your lap top and cell phone. As time goes on you earn more privileges. It also varies from AIT to AIT.

This is just what i've learned from the forum, it's not from experience.

It also depends on the length of your AIT. TRADOC tends to not want AIT students who are in for 30+ weeks to be under IET conditions and the policy is to treat them like permanent party.

The soldier spends Family Day and Graduation Day with family, although some have to leave immediately for AIT after graduation.
So far for 63B AIT in Ft. Jackson, I understand that it's as hard as BCT because of higher expectations, even though there's more free time on the weekend. Privileges are still limited ("officially" they're not allowed their phones yet), until they hit gold phase in the 8th week of the 12 week training. 'Til then it's field training, barracks or on-post passes... No free time during the week.

At Jackson, family day is always on a Thursday and Graduation is always on a Friday. On Family day there will be some demonstrations and a short ceremony (General Casey spoke at our fam day) and you will be done by around 9am. You will be released right then and there to your family, and have to report back to your company area at around 8pm. So you will have about 11 hours or so with your family. You have to stay on post however, and believe me there isnt 11 hours of stuff to do at Ft Jackson. You will have the chance to go and replace your ACU's, if theres something wrong with them on this day, so most people do this on fam day.

On graduation day, you will be done by around 10 am or so. From there you have 3 scenarios. First, they give you the option of having your family drive you to your AIT location, if its close enough. Since grad day is on Friday, most people have to report to AIT on Monday, that gives you 2-3 days with your family. Second, you can choose to get to AIT via govt transport. if thats the case you will prob leave early on Sat morning, so you will have the rest of friday afternoon with your family. The third option is if you are split option, meaning your AIT date is not directly after BCT, in which case you can go home, either by govt transport or family can take you, if youre close enough.

I also heard some had to leave before all the ceremonies because they had to report to AIT on Sunday and the travel time was that long.
Also at Jackson, if you stay there for AIT, you get overnights on Friday and Saturday, but have to report at like 400 on Saturday to get your stuff and be transported to your unit, then you can meet with family in the afternoon. You're due back 1600 Sunday. Or something like that, depending on your unit...
