Thread: Reserve Officer transfer opportunities

    Default Reserve Officer transfer opportunities

I'm currently drilling in the Navy Reserve as an O-4. Interested in opportunities in the Guard. Can I transfer at my present rank? Was 12 yrs active as helo pilot and 3 yrs drilling reservist. From previous posts, saw that probably had to revert to CW2 for Flight School. At my age (41 yrs) not really interested in military flight school again. Could I get into aviation maintenance or another specialty? I have a technical M.S. Currently XO of a 90 member unit.
    Thanks,
    Jeff
P.S. One final question: Since I live on a state border, can I live in one state and drill in the National Guard of another?

    1. Yes, you can keep your present rank. There may be a problem finding a vacancy in your field at that rank, however. It will be much easier to place you as a CW2.
    2. If you are already a military rated rotary-wing aviator, then you don't need to complete flight school all over again. You must complete a transition course on the airframe that you will fly for the Guard (usually this is about six weeks long).
    3. Speak to your state's Officer Strength Manager about career opportunities.
    4. The Guard doesn't care where you live, as long as you show up to drill on time. I personally drilled across the border for seven years, and I know a number of other people who have done this. Your only real concern is how to handle state taxes properly, since you live in one state and earn income in another. Speak to a tax professional about this.
