OTH to General(under honorablr conditions)

I just wanted to let all of you prior service with oth's know that it is actually possible to get an upgrade; possible but certianly not easily obtained. It took me several years of trying, researching and retrying, but I finally got an upgrade. I had an oth out of the Marines from 1994. I think the key factors were, my time past since discharge,near 15 years. My post service conduct. And my determination by going all the way to DC on my own for a personal appearence, which helped helped get the upgrade. Not to mention countless letters to government officals, referal letters, clear criminal history and many other documents. You can never use the excuse that you were just young and dumb, even if you were. Take full responsibility of your actions and stress any good you have done since. The american legion in DC is a great resource for help. It is possible so keep trying if this is your goal. Next step is finding recruiter that will help me re enlist into the guard.

Congrats. I knew alot of Marines that received the OTH for minor disciplinary infractions e.g. office hours/NJP/article 15. Yours took alot of time. They did the whole Navy discharge review board shabang and got it upgraded within 6 years. Now you can try to get in the Guard if you like.

Tell us more about the role the American Legion played. I am assisting someone in writing an appeal the Records Correction Board for a similar circumstance. I had no idea about the Legion, so any help would be appreciated--

Sir, they provide a representative to give guidance (free since you can pay for an attorney to represent you) on the review process. One of my goods friends from the Corps and New York City went through this and used a veteran's organization (Black Veterans For Social Justice in Brooklyn). Here are two links and you can inquire if you like about how they assist veterans in these predicaments. I am a member of the Legion and VFW but just use their drinking services.
