Thread: Housing allowence while in Basic/Ait?

Default Housing allowence while in Basic/Ait?

If you are going through Basic or AIT do you get Basic Housing Allowence for your dependents.

One of my current issues if I enlist would be covering the loss of money from my current job for the 2-4 mths I would be in training.

Also, since I have a degree and would be an E-4, does that pay and rank start before basic, or once you complete it.

If anyone here knows the *correct* answer, please feel free to chime in! I'm not saying this is right, but this is what I was told, and what I have "pieced together" from the websites, forums, etc. And I hope this is right, because this is how I'm planning to keep Wells Fargo Mortgage happy while I'm away!

    a) you start out immediately the day you sign up as an E-4. You are an E-4 before, during, and after basic.

    b) Yes, you get BAH. But, it's probably going to be BAH 2, which is a bit lower than regular BAH. I wish I could figure out how to do the cool links, but I can't do those... I found a lot of info on About.com, and you can then go directly to DOD websites that list all the criteria and levels of BAH.

    c) Since you will be separated from your dependants, you also get FSA (???) family separation allowance. There's also a couple different levels of this, depending on how long you are active. For most basic and AIT, since it's less than (140? 180? days), you will get a flat $250.

    d) not sure of your own financial status, or how many dependants you have. You might want to check on FSSA... which is Family Subsistence Supplemental Allowance. While on ACTIVE duty, it supplements your income, if you are below 130% of the poverty line. Basically, if you are eligible or on food stamps, it will kick in enough money to take the place of food stamps, up to $500 a month.

    e) to set up a bit of a cushion, you will probably qualify for the Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act. (i'm going to try to do the link thing here)http://www.military.com/ResourcesAlm...,47--1,00.html If your income is lowered because of active military service (such as, in basic training), credit cards must lower their interest rate to 6%, mortgages lowered to 6%, your mortgage company can't forclose on you, etc. Clink on the link, then click on the heading you want to check out. Here's another good one~http://www.military.com/benefits/leg...sked-questions

If anyone knows of anything else, OR thinks that I've goofed on the above stuff, please let me/us know!

    Thanks for the info Jan.

Unfortunately, I went to the eye doctor this morning. My vision has gotten a little bit worse, and I am probably not a candidate for LASIK. I am still trying to do some checking on other types of waivers, but it is not looking good.

However, if I get BAH that will certainly help if I go in.

If anyone could help clarify this, I have been told different information both from reliable sources. Some say I will get BAH through my OSUT for 11b, some say only BAHII. Does anyone know for sure which it is? It's hard to make a budget since this is a $500 month difference for my area.

Would I still get seperation pay if my wife were to come down and get an apartment or extended stay hotel while I'm in AIT? I am prior service, so I'm pretty sure I would at least have nights/weekends off. The school I'm looking at is 5 months, so it would be nice if this could work.

I was in the same boat you do get BAH II while in training, Jan said you get family separation but thats not accurate, BECAUSE she COULD tehnically come down to where you are. This pay is generally only for deployments. The link below takes you to pentagon's pay site and you just click on BAH II enter your zip and rank and it will calculate your entilement.

    Hope that helped.

The regulation that states who is eligible and who isn't as far as BAH, transportaton of household goods, ect.. is the Joint Federal Travel Regulation. I had an issue with BAH when I was in school and found all of the answers there.

I just returned on the 25th of May from Benning for my 11B OSUT. I recieved my Specialist pay, full BAH (for my residence) and family separation. I am married, have a mortgage and no kids.
I don't know if there is a difference between how OSUT soldiers and traditional BCT/AIT soldiers are treated. I wouldn't think so.
I will say that I got about 10 different stories about allowances from different people before getting set up at Benning. I heard no family separation, I heard BAH 2, BAH for the Fort Benning area, etc.
Trust me, I was happy as **** to get the allowances that I did--my pay was more than doubled considering the no tax status of allowances.
BTW, I have been recieving Specialist pay for my pre basic training drills, so that shouldn't be a question.
