  • Help between 14G or 13F

I am in the process of enlisting in the NG. I am prior service active duty Army and ETSd in 2008 as a SSG 35F. I have recently looked into the NG as another way of filling that void that so many feel after getting out prematurely.

My recruiter offered me 14G Air Defense Battle Management System Operator and 13F Fire Support Specialist. Both are skill level 3 positions. I know what a 13F does but I am lost on what a 14G does. I have looked at and read everything I could find on the net and this site. Here are a few questions I have regarding 14G:

    Are you at BN..BDE..DIV level?
How is advancement? I know NG promotions work slightly different.
What direction do you see 14Gs going? ADA seems to be a small community. I have read it seems to be a dying field and others say itís up and coming.
My other choices are 11B and 31BÖbut havenít gotten the line/para on these yet.
Any and all personal experiences are welcomed.

Has this Recruiter told you what rank you're going to be coming back in at?

      +1, typically 14G slots are E1-E4.

Interesting.. He told me the 14G position was an E6 position. Thanks for your response. I will not sign for anything less than E6. I will see what comes of it. I am always open to 13F or 11B.

The only way you can retain your current rank is to come back in the same MOS as you left.

I just fought this battle for an E-5 who has to come back in as a Specialist because we don't carry his MOS in our state.

In the Guard, you will rarely have a BDE or DIV to serve in. Expect as a SSG; to be at a company, detachment, BN or Command level. There are no promotion boards in the Guard (that you will appear for) and E4 to E5/E5 to E6 promotion lists are released once a year.

Good info. Iím not disputing what you are saying but I hope you are wrong!!! If worse comes to worse I will take a reduction in rank to E-5. Not very happy about this but sometimes you have to suck it up. I will let everyone know what happens.

Iím hoping for the 13F or 11B slot. Iím trying to kill the monotony of sitting behind a desk five days a week.

Expect the worse but hope for the best.

Not saying you were wrong; maybe every state is different...but I was able to retain my E-6 and reclass into a different MOS.
