  • Marine to California Nat Guard

Hey all I'm a US Marine finishing up my 3 years IRR and I'm looking into the guard. I got out an NCO (Cpl) and heard ill be going in as a Specialist most likely. I WILL be allowed to reclass although my job is still up in the air until I commit with a recruiter. I just miss the military, a few questions: what does AIT consist of in general? Is it mos school? Will I be bunking with 2 shavetails? How is prior service treated (in general) any advice? Good MOS suggestions for a dad of 2 who isn't trying to relive his glory days of running and gunning but still doesn't wanna be trapped behind a desk.

Also how are uniforms done in the guard? Am I gonna be buying them up front from the exchange? Issued and subtracted during AIT or am I getting them from my unit (since I am prior service Marine and I've heard I will report to my unit BEFORE AIT)

      Jim,

Training can vary a great deal depending on the job you select; some will closely mirror college and others you will spend a lot of time doing hands on or in the field. Living conditions again will depend, I've heard variances from 1 person quarters to 40 man barracks. It does seem that many MOS locations will have slightly different accommodations for prior service, if even just separating them from newer soldiers.

A lot of it depends on your situation. However, to answer in general terms - AIT is MOS school. You learn your job there. Depending on whether or not you go to a big Army school or an RTI to reclass, your experience will differ as in AIT private treatment or PS soldier treatment. That will also dictate who you bunk with in terms of newbies or not.

Prior service are usually treated fairly well unless you're a turd sammitch.... and then it royally sucks.

Good MOS are to be had in every branch. It really depends on your interests and what you qualify for. You may hate IT stuff but love CBRN.. who knows, ya know?
