  • Active Duty Marine to Guard

    Hello,

I am a first time poster, long time listener. HA! Ok but seriously. I am currently a Corporal (E-4) in the USMC. I have 7 1/2 years in this gun club. Because I haven't/won't pick up Sergeant before I hit my 8 year mark in October, I am looking at joining the Guard. Unfortunately I do not hit my EAS (I believe y'all call it ETS) until January due to a contract extention before I re-enlisted in 09. Now I was told that I can't do anything until I am 6 months out, but I was hoping for any advice from you guys.

I am wondering, if I do get accepted and come into the Guard, would I be allowed to pick any MOS I want? Im currently a 1341 (91L) but I am really considering something in the 11x field.

I was also wondering if I will lose any rank, and if so, how long would it take me to get it back? I appreciate any help that you could give me. Thank you gentlemen very much!

You can chose whichever MOS that you qualify for and is available. A local Recruiter should be able to tell you what's available and pull your ASVAB scores to determine what you qualify for. Keep in mind, if you change your MOS you will be required to enlist for three years. If you keep your same MOS you can come in for one. Your choice.

You will keep your rank and Time in Grade.

One caveat, and this seems to be an issue with jarheads coming over....

You'll keep your E-4, but odds are, unless you get accepted into a combat arms *AND* they have a slot for a CPL, you'll come in as a SPC.

That is something you'll definitely need to bring up with your recruiter as well.

Awesome. The reason I came to this forum is the Recruiter where I am at doesn't seem to want to talk to me. Or the entire office is on leave. I am not arrogant like some others, I understand the protocol as far as being a Specialist goes. I was just concerned about being busted down to E3. 8 years is a lot of work to go back a step. But Corporal or SPC I wouldnt mind. The reason I want to do Guard is because I have hit my Higher tenior, and every branch except the Guard has something saying that they wont take me. I have always wanted to serve my country. My time in the Marine Corps is over, so I will do whatever I have to to stay in a uniform to protect my country. Even if that means being an E3 again. Thanks again for your help guys.

That is an excellent attitude. Personally, I could not go AD as an E3. I will always be broke.

And I say "Jarhead" out of respect... my mom had 5 sons. She ended up with 4 Marines and 1 Soldier.

I was never one to follow the pack...!
