  • National Guard to Merchant Marine

Hey ive been in the system for about 4 years now and I have decided to become a merchant marine (economy problems). Ive tried to go active duty but right now all the recruiters tell me that to go active I need to be airborne qualified. No disrespect but im in the Puerto Rico National Guard (PRNG) and they wont pay for that school, Ive tried to find a AGR position or orders but the orders are for just 2 weeks and might not be any orders in weeks after.

My father is a merchant marine and he can help me get in but I have doubts of how the system works. I called a NG recruiter and he told me it was not possible because of my drills. Now I was told that since being a merchant marine is a government employee, why should this be a problem? Please anyone that REALLY HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ME Ill be greatly greatful!

You have a contract with the National Guard that needs to be fulfilled and you will have to engage your chain of command on making up drills if you have a profession that keeps you away from those drills and ATs. I have many friends that work as civilians in federal jobs, ranging from administrative to federal law enforcement such as customs and border patrol but they continue to go to their drills. Still try to get a job in the merchant marines and if accepted, then take it from there.
