  • Active Duty to Guard (Active First Program)

Hello all, I enlisted into the Active First program in 2011 as a Health Care Specialist in the NC NG (3 Active, 5 guard) and am set to ETS in Oct 2014. As a 19 year old who wanted so badly to enlist, I admit I should have read my contract a little more thoroughly. When I begin ETSing out of of the army and start transitioning back to the guard, I will be able to choose a unit in North Carolina that I want as long as they have a slot for my MOS/Rank correct? Also, does anyone know if NC has any units that are purely medical that an E-4 can go to? I am currently deployed and don't mind deploying again, but how does deployment in the guard work? As in, do they typically ask for volunteers from a unit first? I'm going to be going back to nursing school and would rather not deploy during that two years if at all possible.

Whether this is completely true or not, I heard that the NG does not do boards for E-5. Would it benefit me to go to WLC or the promotion board before returning back to the guard? Points are pretty high for medics at this time so I am certain I won't get sergeant before I return. Sorry for the laundry list of questions, but I don't feel like bugging my recruiter after 2 and a half years. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

I don't know about open slots, but I do know that there is a medical unit (C Co 230 BSB) in NC.

If your unit recommends you, I will go to the promotion board and WLC. WLC first because that will give you the edge for the annual E5 promotion board (paper board) in the Guard.
