  • Deployment for a 91B in Afghanistan

I just graduated AIT and got back to my home unit, and the readiness NCO has been asking me if I want to deploy this July. Part of me feels that it's my duty to volunteer to deploy, but at the same time I'm wondering if I will regret volunteering. My fiance of course doesn't want me to go, and my father who is a Vietnam vet won't give me much advice. What would an Afghanistan deployment be like for a PV2 91B? I'm attached to an infantry unit, If that makes a difference. But would I stay on the fob mostly, or would I be out on convoys all the time? If I do volunteer I would be going to hotel 8 school (recovery technician). And advice or insight would be highly appreciated!

91, that would actually be a question you would need to pose to the Readiness NCO. It would depend on the mission of the unit that you are attached to for the deployment.

I recommend that you go. More than that, I recommend that you have a plan and optimize your experience.
      1. Don't get married right before you deploy.
      2. Save the money you earn.
      3. Don't buy a motorcycle or souped-up Honda Civic.
      4. Take distance learning courses while deployed, and don't spend all your free time killing zombies or watching porn.
      5. Upon your return, go back to school full-time with your additional GI Bill benefits, and live modestly off your savings.
