  • Military Police/Corrections/Law Enforcement MOS's

    Hello!

My name is Amy, I am 23 years old and I am very interested in joining the National Guard, as a young girl I have always been interested and am finally thinking of actually joining once I put my year in at the Bureau. I just started a Career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons which has brought a huge carreer change to me and I have fallen in love with Corrections. However, National Guard doesn't offer any direct corrections MOS so after speaking to a chat agent online, he mentioned MP-which is not exactly the work I do but very similar as we are considered police inside the Federal Prisons.

I have never been in the military before so all of this will be new to me so I am curious to know if MP should be something I should be interested in or should I look into something else - which I did view several other options but they really don't have much else that interests me. I love action, and adrenaline, so maybe MP is right up my alley. Any thoughts on what I should consider would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know the probability of being deployed much? Not that I would mind it, as its part of my decision to enlist but I just bought a house and was curious about that. I am very excited about this new journey, but have to get other things in order before enlisting. I have sent in a app to speak with a National Guard Rep but haven't spoken to anyone just yet. I have tons of questions. Thanks for any and all your help.

    -Amy

As far as I know the NG has very few 31B (MP) units. Depending on your state there might not be any. Even though MPs do get deployed and do see combat, they're officially a combat support MOS and therefore are mostly an Army Reserve option. Again, this is all general info and you'll need to speak with your recruiter to be sure.

Most of your statement is incorrect. The Army National Guard has plenty of MP units. Just about one in every state.

I was not aware of that, but was just going by general guidelines for the types of units in USAR/NG. Thanks, sorry if I misled anyone.

As a former MP (31B), I did (31E Corrections) work when I worked at the detention facility in Iraq. I did that for 4 months before I took over a squad to train the Iraqi Police. Here are some videos and ask the recruiter if there are any 31E openings in your state.

Here is another link with info. Also, check with the US Army Reserve recruiter if 31E exists in your state.

Part of the confusion is the multiple types of MP units. CID, Law and Order Detachments, General Support MP companies and detainee operations.

A good chunk of those that are in the NG are GS platoons/companies in support of the modular force design/maneuver commander (combat arms). The USAR really holds the bulk of the detainee operations MP units and actually has a whole MG (2 star) command for its MP force.

Deployments can both be in the US to back fill state side posts or OCONUS in support of whatever operation is going on. I've done and seen both.

How MPs do things are very frustrating if you're coming from the civilian world and used to civilian practices.
