  • Experienced insight needed

Hello, I am looking for experienced insight on joining the NG. I am 32 going back to school to finish my BA and I work at a full-time job that I absolutely despise. I'm really at a point where I have that urge to serve as well as take advantage of some of the benefits of the NG. What can I expect, or should expect? What are the advantages of going down this path? My overall goal is to complete college and move on to Graduate studies. Any and all insight greatly encouraged and appreciated.

    Regards

The education benefits are great, especially if you have student loans. The other obvious benefits are serving your country & being a part of something bigger. When you graduate BCT, it will be the proudest moment of your life and you'll be in the best shape of your life too.

The hardest part for someone your age is dealing with all the younger soldiers in BCT. You'll likely be older than most of the Drill Sergeants too. If you can handle the "Old Man" & "Gramps" calls you'll be ok. The DS will likely respect you for your effort and use you as an example, "Gramps here can do it Private!"

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Any advice you could give on what would be the ideal field to enter. I'm studying law and next semester will begin gearing my schedule towards Pre-law consideration. Thanks

      Regards,
      Adam

You job choice will depend on what you're looking to get out of the Guard. If you're looking for some experience in your field of interest I would recommend 27D - Paralegal Specialist or possibly 31B - Military Police. If, on the other hand, you're looking to get away from the books and out from behind the desk, you may want to explore a combat arms field such as 11B - Infantry, 12B - Combat Engineer, 13F - Fire Support Specialist or 19D - Cavalry Scout.

Often times, the Guard can be used as a great escape from the typical 40+ hour work week.

If you're looking to pay off student loans, often times not all MOS's offer the Student Loan Repayment Program so that may be something you'll want to consider.

        Best of luck!!

The ideal field is the one you like the most and is closest to home, so you don't have to get up at 0200 and drive to drill.

But down the road if you want to get promoted you may be doing the red-eye thing.

Thanks all. I had a couple questions on income while in BCT, What can I expect to make while there? I'm an adult have monthly obligations that must be taken care of. What's the SOP as far as pay.

            Thanks

Depends on rank and if you have any dependents. I suggest you look up DOD military pay calculator.
