  • What do you guys think?

Hello everyone about 4 months ago I went to MEPS for the Air Force and everything went good except for when I took my blood pressure and my pulse was to high, I guess I get nervous around doctors because my BP is fine at home. MEPS then proceeded to give me a EKG which apparently came back abnormal. They told me I had to get a cardio consult, which was never set up by my Air Force recruiter. My Air Force recruiter moved states and I am now trying to enlist in the Army National Guard. I decided to go to a cardiologist to get everything checked out for my self. The main Cardiologist at NAS Jacksonville had me wear a heart monitor for 24 hours, did another EKG and a heart echo and everything came back normal. He gave me paperwork with the EKG attached to it and wrote off saying I am fit for military duty. My question to you guys is do you think I will still need to do the MEPS consult or can my recruiter just submit my paperwork to MEPS. Also my Cardiologist said that he was the only Military Cardiologist in the region and MEPS would just send me back to him, Has anyone went to a military base to get a Consult for MEPS done? Thank you everyone in advance and happy Veterans Day!!!

I would take the paper work he gave you with you to MEPS. When it comes to EKG's some interpertation can be left up to the tech running it. I had a full physical done by the military including an EKG a year ago and it showed "abnormal" activity. I had a second one performed by another military tech and it also came back "abnormal." So I was refered to a specialist (civilian cardiologist) who conducted his own EKG and ECHO and told me my heart was nothing short of extremely healthy, hell my resting heart rate was 40 BPM. He told me that many techs are used to seeing EKG's from older people 50+ so when they see an EKG from a young and active person of course it looks abnormal. Abnormal to what they normally see that is.

I also suggest not drinking any energy drinks or coffee that morning before MEPS. Even though a cardiologist can pick these kinds of things up really easily, that doesn't mean the A1C air force tech can.

Thanks for your response SGT Juggernaut. I gave my recruiter a copy of the Paperwork so she could submit it, she said she will contact me next week but said more than likely I will still have to do the consult but I can use my paperwork as ammo to show I'm fine. I think its Ludicrous that MEPS would waste their time and money to send me to someone when I have proof from a Military Cardiologist that I'm fine. By the way that's crazy your resting heart rate was 40! The lowest Ive seen my pulse was 52 but that was at home at doctors offices it shoots up to like 90-100, sometimes higher.I believe the EKG I did at MEPS came out abnormal because my Heart rate was over 100. I was able to get it down to 90 for my Cardiologist on base and the EKG came out normal, I'm guessing I have "white coat syndrome" which is annoying but I'm trying to control it. I'm praying that I will be apart of the Army National Guard soon. Also out of curiosity has anyone been to a Military base to get a consult, I know it really just depends where MEPS sends you but just wondering if some has in the past. Thanks

They'll send you to their own consultants no matter what. they have to make sure the doctor you went to doesn't personally know you and wouldn't lie for you. its crazy but thats what they do.
