  • Indiana National Guard/ROTC/SMP

My son is a high school senior preparing to enlist in the Guard this week. His goals include attending college at a state school in the fall, enrolling on the military science/ROTC program, and a commission in the U.S. Army as second Lt. upon graduation. His course of study is specific.

We have been told upon enlisting he will drill with the local guard unit to prepare him for BCT this summer. When returning from BCT he will start his college career. As long as he is enrolled and taking his ROTC courses, he will not drill nor be deployed (no AIT yet). He will go to AIT the summer after his Freshman year and return to school and be a given a non deployable control number. As long as he remains in good standing he keeps that control number even when he contracts midway through his sophomore year. Question on this to follow??
His tuition is covered freshman year and with all the other moneys, most of his college will be paid for.

His enlistment contract is a 6/2 and will be replaced with another when he contracts with ROTC/SMP.

My nerves are in active mode: 1: this sequester and how it will effect the U.S. Army 2: How they may limit the number of contracts to ROTC cadets.

Anyone with any information or advice would be very helpful.

    Thank you!
