  • Career in the NG as an officer

    Hi all,

I have a question, or rather I need advice regarding my possible future career in the NG. I am now finishing my AIT as am91b at Ft.Jackson. however, I am very interested in making further career. I have a high ASVAB score (98) and a master's degree. My PT results are currently not the highest ones (about 250 points), but I am working on this all the time. Can I become an officer in the NG? I heard that you also can develop your MOS skills, get certifications etc., to be promoted and earn more. What could you advise me?

Yes you can become an officer with the appropriate training. But do you want to? This depends on what you want out of your Army experience. 90% of people will tell you to be an officer because of your Masters Degree. The benefits and pay are much better. But Officer path vs Enlisted path is a personal decision to degree holding folk. My father also has a masters degree and hasn't considered a Commission once. He enjoys his career on the enlisted side of things, just as you may enjoy the Commissioned side. What I can tell you is that before leaving IET, you've maxed out the category of civilian education. Which, in my experience, gives you ehh...50-70 points on most guys when you are eligible for your e-5. I'm guessing that you enlisted as a Specialist because of your degree. If that is the case you are well on your way on the enlisted side.

Yes it is a personal choice as Orelladanza stated, but if your "real" question is if you can? Yes, dependent on your age and other factors.

Just research OCS, or visit here.

        A Master's degree?

If you are going to persue the option to become an Officer, you are going to need to work on your written communication skills. The post above was painful to read.
