Several hundred retired military leaders are raising red flags about childhood obesity in the U.S. and its impact on finding qualified recruits, calling for junk food to be booted out of schools and healthier fare to be offered in vending machines and a la carte lines.

The numbers are high but realistic, but I am surprised that this issue is raised by military officials because you can see in Iraq or Afghanistan soldiers have access to junk food inside their bases.
Still if we counter obesity from as early as pre-school and teach our children what foods makes us gain weight and what does it mean to be obese we can totally limit this epidemic from growing and affecting our national security.

In all honesty though this is a civilian problem that the Army is inheriting and that's where it has to be addressed at the lower levels such as in the schools for example. I mean not for nothing but if you walked into any grammar, middle, and high school all the kids would most likely say gym class is a joke with no one taking it seriously in the slightest.

Ha! Has anyone noticed the military doesn't do a very good job at promoting good eating habits either? Army Forts both CONUS and OCONUS are replete with fast food chains, to the extent that I know I have difficulty eating healthy on post without brown bagging it. Even DFACs are heavily laden with high calorie, high fat foods...and in theater at a built up FOB it can be even worse!
