Water is definitely a start. I bet you could probably throw the thing in the washing machine and air dry it. If there are odors or stains, try soaking it in a mixture of soap, water, and vinegar. Scrub if need be. These kind of items were built tough.

        Do this at a laundromat.

Good point! That would be wise.

We used Simple Green and a soft bristle scrub brush, then into the washer, and gently dry cycle, and finish air dry. Always cleared CIF with this technique without destroying the equipment.

What type of pack is it? Nylon? Canvas? That matters, too.

            Good luck.

A good stiff brush and dawn dish-washing detergent.

Don't forget to put two or three 25 lbs. dumbells into that front end loading washing machine as well.

If possible, I try to use my home state issued equipment. That way if I get a CIF issue at the beginning of a course, I put all that stuff into a box and never touch it. Makes turn in a breeze.

I take my stuff to a coin operated car wash, the one that allows you to wash your car yourself. This way I can take advantage of the power washer hose and blast the **** out of my gear. Use standard washing machine detergent and a brush, don't use the brush at the car wash. This method works really well for body armor. I can always see the sweat, dirt, and hard work wash out of my IBA.
