Looks like I will be going to BCT at 41 and at the lower grade of E5, any information?

I am 30 and was dropped to the lower grade of E-4. Every company is different, but from my company treated the prior service different. We got our cell phones back after two weeks and we got to go on a post pass from 1100-2000 every Sunday. We all lived in our own bay and didn't get inspected like the privates. Some other prior service had more privileges, others had less. I would imagine with you being an NCO you will have the privileges that I had at a minimum.

I am 32 (33 October 18th) and I just graduated yesterday myself. I was in Alpha Co 2-13th (We got honor company heh) and got no respect as a prior, I mean I didnt get yelled at like the newbies but being navy they hated me off the get go. Our NCO's got passes ect, but we had 4 priors with like a total of 6 deployments and we got treated no diffrent then privates. But our NCO's didnt get smoked when we did got passes, and had the easy life, but not us e-4's but then again I heard Charlie's e4's got passes, I just got unlucky I guess.

For a prior service NCO...I'd say they've earned it. For anyone else, I'm not so sure.

The "easy life" lol. I always thought NCO's had the easy life... Until I became an NCO of course. I agree with HR NCO that if anyone is to get passes it should be them. As for them not getting "smoked". BCT is an environment in which they are supposed to demonstrate discipline and professionalism. It is VERY unprofessional to "smoke" an NCO in front of junior enlisted, as it undermines their authority as NCO's.

We had quite a few prior service in our BCT company. One was E-3 and he wasn't treated much differently than the rest of us, but he was a moron so that's the main reason. The older E-4 and E-5 and two E-6's were treated almost like fellow DS's. The older E-4 didn't get to stay in the NCO barracks though. He ended up getting hurt and went home after a month anyways. He came back towards the end, but was with a different company.

I am having similar thoughts of going back in the service. I am 37 currently. I have been in healthcare for 13 years and been a police officer as well for several. Of course I will continue healthcare on the outside to complete the degree which shouldn't take more than 1 year tops, but my interest in the military is not to do registered nursing but that of the dustoff component. I was prior service and would like to enter the army guard as a flight medic due to my mentioned current jobs and passions. As expected they told me I would have to do BCT since mine was Navy and was years ago. It is not the concept of doing it over again because surely I could benefit from the structure and discipline again lol however I would be overwhelmed with joy if able to miss out on a few of the minor hate factors I recall from my basic I got out of the Navy early and it kind of ran me a pickle so to speak. When I was transferred to the TPU from my ship awaiting discharge paperwork I expected it to be rapid (as well as they did) and I did not take the advancement test they required for E-4 (per their recommendations). One year later when I finally did get out I was a little upset but nonetheless got over it quickly and went about my life.

I have a total combined time of only 5 years (not that much but enough to get the basic military style) between my active duty and a stent of air guard, but since I did not reclass or attend AIT with the air guard (of which was mainly due to unforeseen technicalities) I again fell into the delay of rank. I had of course been through tech school previously when I was active navy but it was for a different career field (just getting that out there). I LOVED the air guard but sadly they have a rule that until you finish your AIT, regardless of time in grade, you can not go above E-3! It is just the way the Air Force Instruction operate and nothing they could do to change it. I was well liked and received many praises including a medal but still didn't get any rank lol (I would have traded the medal lol).

The option has taunted me recently to go to the army guard or reserve side because they have the medevac units available but my obvious main concerns weigh heavily. For example how would I do in BCT and how are we treated??? I am surely not some long time veteran like a few others that have posted and I would value the training that the army would provide me (lets face it the navy and air force really don't do much with tents and MRE's or compasses for that matter lol). I have read multiple different reviews online but mostly all from E5 and E6 and not all the same. I would go to Ft. Sill I believe based on my location but I would surely fight for something better if needed (including transport myself). Would we be in the same barracks as everyone else or have we earned enough dignity/respect to get at least a couple perks while in BCT (or AIT for that matter) like maybe a different section or room? Would we ever get to use our cell phone or write letters? Would we get to go to the store unescorted lol? Are we allowed to ever leave the post? These are all questions specifically regarding BCT itself, not just AIT but of course any commentary on that subject area would be appreciated as well.

Where did you go to BCT btw? (am I to assume that ft. Jackson is it since the reviews are mentioning it and do you have, or heard, any reviews of ft. sill on this matter) Is the mutual courtesy shown to PS only for the NCO's? I ask because it kinda sucks to always be viewed as a "career" E3 LMAO)! Did you like it? Was the age a limiting factor? Will they know you are PS or did you say something? If you just shut up and go with the program do they recognize that or are you just the same piece of undisciplined work like the others? Another fear of mine is what kind of responsibilities do they assign you? I am good at taking on leadership roles but lets be honest.......if I knew they proper "army way" and how all their cool gadgets worked already then I wouldn't be here now would I! I would love any more details or insight

Has there been anyone who has graduated BCT more recently? I expect to be heading there next month (April 2014) but have heard some mixed reviews for prior service. I seriously doubt anybody else going through it will be senior to me as I made E6 back in 2007, but I expect we will all be there just to shut up & learn...perhaps lead the privates when necessary. I don't know. I guess I am curious to know how much room is given, if any at all, to handle things before the Drill Sergeant corrects it for all of us. By no means am I walking into this expecting to know everything, (in fact, I fully expect several 17-18 year-old privates will know more about weapons handling than I do) but certain aspects of military life do translate between the branches.
Any insight is appreciated....and I am chomping at the bit to get started in a career I will enjoy and get more sleep will @ BCT. (If you think I am crazy for saying that, try raising 4 kids ages 6 & under.) I love them, but getting some extra sleep will be nice. As long as any interrupted sleep there is for training and not cleaning up a wet bed, I will do it with a smile.
