  • Wristwatch at BCT?

    Does anyone on here know
    1) whether or not we can take a wristwatch to BCT at Ft. Jackson?

    if so

    2) the requirements for an acceptable watch?

I've heard that a plain black one is ok, but to make sure that it has a stopwatch on it. Thanks for your assistance, I'm just trying to get things wrapped up before I ship in a week.

yea, you should be able to have one, it has to be solid black, and stopwatch doesnt matter, but most have one. i would suggest a gshock, they are about 60 at walmart, and its worth it. my fiance got me one, and they let me wear it in osut, but we only got to wear it if we were pg or squad leader, or in some type of leadership position.

        Awesome, thanks for the suggestions.

I'm not sure if I'll be in a leadership position of any sort but I've been told that, being a 41 year old Specialist, former Navy E-5, I probably will be. If not, I'm fine with that too. I'm just happy to be able to go to BCT.

Can someone explain the rationale behind this?

Anyway, Casio GShock has served me quite well. It has lasted longer than other watches that I've had.

In my opinion, in a training environment such as Basic Training, allowing only Soldiers in leadership positions know the time puts a lot of responsibility on them. They can't just say to their "juniors" "Meet me outside at 0715". They will have to actually work to get them outside.

Everyone should have a watch, I agree. But when you're breaking a civilian down to become a Soldier, I agree with this method.

I just bought the first watch that I saw in the PX on my first day. 20 bucks and it lasted until my puppy chewed it up.

Holy Mackrel Grandpa!! You know you graduated high school 5 or 6 years before the kids you are going with were born.

Yep, I certainly do realize that. Actually I joined the Navy in '88 so I was probably already done with my first enlistment by the time they were born. Luckily, I'm also in much better shape than most 41 year olds, and all of them that I know personally. Still not in phenomenal shape, but I'm in better shape now than while I was in the Navy.

I say get something cheap. Won't have to worry about a good one getting broken or stolen.

Thats how it was when I went through. Only the PG got to wear a watch. The rationale is as they said, "it doesn't matter what time it is, you train when we tell you to train".

That actually makes perfect sense to me. When I went through Navy Basic back in '88 we didn't need a watch. Our Company Commanders let us know what time it was. Whether it was time for push-ups, time for chow, time for marching, time for PT (there was a LOT of time for that)...you get the idea.

I recommend a Timex Ironman, I wore one all through BCT and AIT. You'll really, really want to have a watch at all times. You'll want it to judge time to do things and you'll know when the DS's are BSing you about how long it took to do something. Which will be most of the time probably.

You'll have an opportunity to buy one many times at the PX, but they are crap, you'll want to get something better (but cheap) here. You probably won't have the opportunity to go to the large PX until Family Day and that's the only place you'll be able to get a decent watch at Fort Jackson during BCT. I don't recommend buying a $1,000 dive watch.

I had a black Casio through basic that figuratively saved my life. I set it for 5 minute before wakeup so that my bed was made and locker was squared away by the time the DS did their walk through and I used it to time my splits so that I stayed on time for my PT 2 mile. My advice is, the less flashy the better, but no drill sergeant ever said anything about a soldier wearing a watch because we were expected to be punctual
