  • 11B, 21B, or 21W?

I'm a high school student, and waiting until I'm 17 to inlist. However, I'm not yet certain which MOS I want to join. I'm looking at 11B Direct Infantry, 21B Combat Engineer, and 21W Carpentry and Masonry. While in high school, I attend a carpentry vocational course. I hope to get a four year degree with a major in law enforcement. Which MOS would be the best to join?

A few things to consider before narrowing down an MOS.

Speak with a Recruiter and find out which MOS's are available. Consider where you live now and where you'll be going to school in the future. Decide how far you're willing to travel for your weekend drills, this should also help your Recruiter narrow down MOS's.

All of the MOS's you mentioned are great, depending what you want to get out of them. Just my personal opinion, I would lean 21W if it's available.

Regardless of your degree, choosing a MOS of another interest you have had is the best idea in my opinion. That way, you keep your military and civilan seperate separately interesting. I have been a 13F for 5 years 2 months but in my civilian career i am a maintenance technician in a factory, therefore on weekend a month i get off to call in artillery and mortars and the other 15 days a month i work at the plant fixing tire building machines. See what i mean? I have an interesting life and it's been worth it.

11B is a MOS everyone chooses, so realize for promotion and schools you will have far more competition. My mos, as a 13F (Fire Support Specialist), i call in artillery mortars and do everything 11B does also. I reccommend you look into 13F because calling in artillery on top of being a 11B is like having two skills for one job! 21B is also a great MOS if you are into demolitions, aka route clearing and construction fighting positions for 11B and 13F teams. I don't know much about the 21W except for the obvious by reading the title. I am in an in Infantry brigade and we also have an engineer detachment in my area so i have dealt with both immensly.

I will echo the others comments, pick something that will interest you. For some people having a change on the weekends is preffered, others enjoy sticking with what they know. I am a platoon leader for a vertical platoon, of which 12W (no longer 21W) is a primary MOS, and can vouch that it is a great MOS for those that are not afraid of hard work.

Tis is a personal choice and it is yours to make. Having said that go 12B.
