  • Officer Candidate during BCT

Do Officer Candidates have 'special' responsibilities during Basic? Or are they treated identical to the enlisted individuals throughout the 9+ Weeks of BCT?

    Thank you,

Everyone is treated to the same training during BCT. No getting out of the fun! OCS will be something completely different, as I'm sure you know. That's when you'll see a different focus in your training.

      Thank you,
Already writing like the Officer that never served as an enlisted. That THEM vs US mentality.

Your additional responsibilities would depend on your Drill Sergeants. When I went through BCT the 09S were expected to achieve a leadership position without it being handed to them. They also participated in the ceremony after the final ruck that the BC conducted.
For some Drill Sergeants being an 09S just paints a target on your forehead.

You'll be fine though, try to get a leadership position and keep it. Don't mess up, and try to keep the others in line.

Depends on how your drill like/doesn't like 09S. Mine put me in charge on like day two and I stayed in charge til graduation days's last formation. I did loads of paperwork, stayed up later and woke up earlier, had more of a position during our FTX, Blah blah blah..could go on and on.

That being said, there were seven more 09S with me. None of them were ever PG or even APG. I think at most to of them may have been my squad leaders, then my drill sgt fired them within a week and smoked me for picking sorry SL.

Basic for me was very atypical...I stayed busy and they gave me a lot to do and soldiers to look after. Depends on who you are and how your drill sgts are.

ok that was a very poor choice of words lol...

I shouldn't have said "special" What I meant was will OCS candidates in BCT be given more team leader roles or will they be 'verbally encouraged' to take more of leadership role among the other individuals?

We only had three 09S in our company and I don't think a one of us ever held a significant position. We all tried because we wanted the experience, but they kept choosing more of the wall flower types to lead instead. My DS didn't like 09S and they didn't like specialist ranks. They felt that PFC is the highest that anyone should start at. We didn't get smoked more or anything like that, but they just let their opinions be known.

Except for my time spent in BCT where my DS intentionally picked 'wallflowers' for PG's and SL's, I was chosen for PG from day zero in reception and everywhere else I went all the way to my last day in AIT. Everywhere I went the cadre already knew or quickly found out who I was because of my age, rank, and degrees, so they treated me like I was an 09S even though I chose to take the traditional enlistment route. I didn't feel special and didn't want to be treated special. I just did the job I was required to do while I was there. Being the youngest of three, it felt strange to be the oldest guy in the whole battalion including the NCO's and CO's.

I got the honor of making the fireguard roster every night for 9 weeks. I was never PG, APG, or SL.

I had this same "honor" lol. I was the only one the DS trusted to make a cleaning and fireguard roster for our bay. Actually, the DS tried about half a week with another guy and that bombed so he turned around and gave it right back to me. I was also the go-to for filling out hand receipts, sorting inventory for turn-in, etc. I wanted a leadership position but was instructed to help the others with theirs as opposed to actually leading. It provided a unique perspective, and I garnered a lot of respect from my peers there.

There is a fine line there though. When you're in charge, lead. When you're a follower, follow. Make some suggestions and help those who're struggling along, but don't outright try and do it for them or tell them how to do it. This is a trend that will or at least should continue once you're in OCS also.

We had a mix of wallflowers and self important 09S's for PG's. I didn't want any part of it, the view from the cheap seats was entertaining enough. I had other concerns than the petty stuff these kids had the luxury of worrying about in BCT like who is gonna be the next PG. LoL... I just wanted to graduate and get the heck out of there.

That was how it was for me. I was the only 09S as PG and make as PG. The rest were 18 year old females and some 4'3 35 year old dude that I think one of the female DS had a crush on...

They all got fired at some point, I wasn't that lucky.... I got to where I had a dedicated group of people that did stuff for me without me having to ask. Really helpful...these were the people I didn't make do stupid details during the day.
