  • can retired military join the guard ?

This might be a silly question; but in looking through the forums I was unable to find a definitive answer...

I retire from active duty soon after 26 years active duty in the Navy; is it possible to join the National Guard ?

Not quite ready to hang up my uniform; but High year tenure says otherwise

Sorry if its a dumb question...

    Yeah, but ....

It makes no economic sense. You'd need to forego drawing your retired pay, which would far exceed your drill pay. In addition, it would be an administrative nightmare to make it happen.

You may do better to volunteer with your State Militia.

What about working with a local NROTC or JNROTC unit? That strikes me as a perfect fit for retired military personnel who can offer decades of experience to future servicemembers.

Retired servicemembers can work as contractors for ROTC and are the target for JROTC. I believe a common arrangement for JROTC is the school district makes up the difference between your retirement income and what you would be making with active pay.
