  • Questions to ask?

I've made it my goal to join the California National Guard this year. I've spoken with a lot of friends in the service and they've given me good advice. I was wondering if any of you would have some tips/questions for me to ask my recruiter when I speak with him/her. I'm 25 and have my bachelor's degree.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Questions to ask?

You need to ask the recruiter the difference between becoming an officer and enlisting. And the benifits of both.

You need to ask them about student loan repayment.

You need to ask them about the units in your area and the vacant mos's availible.

You need to take the asvab.

You have a wide range of options before you.

Is it possible to get the SLRP and Bonus for enlisting?

Depends on if they are currently offering bonuses. Last I heard they weren't.

Consider that if you become an officer there is no SLRP.

Last year they were offering SLRP and a 20k bonus. I think at the moment you can only get 50,000 in SLRP.

But if you are working on your master's you may get 4,500/yr in FTA.

Or if your state allows you may be able to earn another bachelors for free.

You would also be able to get Tri care reserve select health insurance, which I forgot the monthly permium, I think it's like 70/month.

And you could pay for 400K life insurance. My state gives it's soldiers an additional 250K in life insurance for free.

Have any ideas on what you want to do in the National Guard?

            What is your BA in?

            Are you considering OCS?

You got good credit and criminal background? You'd have to have that to become an officer.

But there are many mos's also that would require that.

            Thought about 11b, infantry?

              Have any foreign language skills?

              Thought about special forces?

Have any civilian skills that you could use in the Guard?

                Re: Questions to ask?

Thanks for all the info Chaplain4me.

I'm considering enlisting as I'd like to have an appreciation for what happens on that side of the fence.

                I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science.

I don't have any criminal history and I've got good credit.

I am actually looking into 11b.

You'd probably be able to enlist as an Specialist, pay grade E-4.

You could always apply for ocs later, if you wanted to.

                      Infantry is serious business.

Irregardless, usually expect one deployment every 3.5 years at the moment.

                          Re: Questions to ask?

It really depends on what interests you. The other consideration is how far from your home your unit would be.

If you are willing to drive arcoss the state once a month, you may have more options.

I found 45b, small arms repairer an interesting mos.

Once I saw some soldiers practicing on a 88mm how., I thought being a cannon crew member would be gravy. Those jokers are awe inspiring. They can put rounds down range from 15 miles away. Devestating lethality.

There is also an intelligence mos where they send you to the Defense language institute to learn a foreign language.

If you are interested in electronics, a satellite repairer is a good option.

If you want to be a "Line" medic, meaning, that you may be deployed to the front, you may want to consider 11b, or 11c, that way you will be on the front too.

11c is a indirect mortar infantryman. Mortars are pretty nasty awesome.

Then there is Chaplain's Assistant, where you can help the Chaplain in religious support.

Make sure you understand pay, federal benefits, state benefits...etc.

Nevermind, don't bother with state benefits. I notice you're from Kalifornia.
