    How can you effectively lose weight, but gain muscle mass? If you are losing weight, you are burning more calories than you are consuming, so wouldn't that make muscle growth impossible? since you need an excess in calories to GAIN weight, and people who need to add muscle or bulk up eat more than those trying to lose weight.

    Eating a lot (good stuff, mind you) builds muscle. Muscle helps you burn fat. Stick to stuff like Chicken and salad, but eat a lot, your body will catch up.

      Eat about 5-6 smaller meals a day. Smaller meals more often help keep your metabolism up and you'll lose more fat that way. Also drink about 10-12 oz of water 20 mins before each meal. That will help suppress hunger and it's also important for weight loss.

      After you do a workout, drink a protein shake or have a bar or something. Protein is essential in building muscle, and you've got a window of about 15-30 mins after a workout to really take advantage of building new muscle. Give each muscle group some time to rest as well (I usually alternate days). Also remember that building new muscle helps burn fat.

      Make sure to eat good healthy proteins (lean chicken, fish, nuts, beans) and a lot of veggies. If you can cut out soda and candy, you'll notice a world of difference within a few weeks.
