FORT KNOX, Ky. Officials at Fort Knox say they are trying to cut more than 100 civilian positions without resorting to layoffs.

The move is due to a directive from the Army, which is reducing its civilian workforce by 8,700 positions by Sept. 30.

At Fort Knox, the cuts are expected to primary affect Army Accessions Command and Garrison Command, which has been directed to cut its 715 civilian positions to 582.

Fort Knox public affairs officer Kyle Hodges told The News-Enterprise of Elizabethtown that it is unclear how the reductions will be made, but officials are looking for ways to eliminate positions without layoffs. He said the post will try to reach its mandate with measures such as voluntary early retirement, attrition and hiring freezes.
