  • Swore in Nov 9th, need a lil advice...

Hey everyone, my names Landon. I recently joined the Oklahoma National Guard in OKC. I swore in on Nov. 9th, found out that my shipping date for basic training is january 26th and i will be leaving for Fort Jackson, SC (anyone been?). My recruiter told me that after basic i will ship to school in VA for 7 weeks and then come home for a month before deploying. Everything is happening so fast and i have so many questions that pop in my head everyday though theres far too many to ask my recruiter without looking stupid lol, maybe you guys could help me out a little if you have the time...?

First off; ill be working in automated logistics, ive read the job descripion and it seems great but honestly is this a good job to have? And does anyone know where im going to deploy to? I know my recruiter doesnt decide but where do most troops go these days in the guard? Im a small guy and not in the best of shape, im only about 5'2 and weigh around 110lb, ive been eating tons but cant seem to gain a pound and im really worried about jumping into this being so small. Any advice? I have "drill" on the 11th of next month, what should i expect and how should i prepare?

Any advice would mean alot to me! Im stressin out...

Just eat as healthy as you can. Don't try to gain weight by eating crappy junk food. Thats just unhealthy.
And start doing push-ups, sit-ups, and start running. Trust me, every little bit will help.

And will you be drilling at Mid-West City? If so, i'll see you there! ha

I believe the paperwork says lexington or chandler if my memory serves correct. Im with my family in texas for the week so cant check right now. What does drill envolve really?

Also i was just wondering, (im going in as e2) how much money will i actually be making? Is there is gussing range? I just want to know i can rest assured knowing i will be alright financially since im dedicating my all to the national guard. Do most people simply get a rergular job for when not serving as active?

Do a couple of searches on the forum. You can find posts regarding pay and also drill. Search "rsp drill" or something similar and you should find plenty of posts.

yes, a few of us have been thru Action Jackson. Look stupid now asking questions or look stupid later asking questions. 92A Automated Logistical Specialist is a great MOS. None of us know to where you will deploy. Ask your unit. It doesn't how big you are; you still gotta do push-ups, sit-ups, & run. Your drill on the 11th will be RSP, which is so fricken fun. Don't worry, be happy.

Chandler is where I live, and it's Headquarters of 160th. Which is what I am. But, as RSP NCO said, if you search RSP Drill, you'll find plenty of information about what it is.
You won't be drilling at Chandler or Lexington until you come back from BCT, and AIT.

Check with your unit on the deployment issue. Recruiters are great at recruiting, but deployments are a whole different ballgame. Only your unit will know the true timeline of its deployment.

On the deployment... I was in a similar situation. Weeks after I enlisted, I was told that I would be deploying, but did not get official confirmation until I checked my AKO e-mail in the middle of AIT and received my orders. The unit that you will be joining, not RSP, will know the tentative plan, but they'll tell you that nothing is certain, which it isn't. It really shouldn't mattter, though. Focus on BCT and AIT and take care of everything else when you are done whether it's going to school, finding a job of deploying. Make a few plans for when you get back, but don't get your heart set on anything, because things always change.

On the rest... Don't worry about being small, because you'll gain weight during Basic Training. Now, just run, do push ups and sit ups to get yourself ready. As far as your pay, just Google "military pay chart 2011" and find your rank. Search these forums for posts about "BAH" to see if you are eligible.

You could try beefing up on lifting weights and protein shakes.

I leave for Jackson Jan 18. I've been in RSP for about 5 months now -- don't sweat it, it's actually a blast. You'll get to do all kinds of fun s*** while you're there. Last month we had a level 4 combatives instructor come in and teach us some stuff, then we had an RSP Combatives tourny like thing (It was awesome). I'm also not very big. I'm about 5'10", 135lbs. Just crank out as many pushups and situps as you can, and when you do the running DON'T WALK!!!!! as long as you keep moving you should be able to manage just fine.

If you are at the RSP site I was at, it's pretty awesome.

Easy, young grasshopper. When you deploy, you'll get plenty of financial incentives to include imminent danger and hostile fire pay. Most young men make more money than they ever had before. Search the forums and Google for most of these answers. As far as dental, when you are Active Duty, most procedures are covered and you can buy dental coverage through Tricare afterwards.

You can get Tricare Reserve Select for about $50/month, you have to pay extra I think to get the dental insurance.

If your teeth are all jacked up they may fix them at BCT. They usually do because it's a readiness issue.

Are you deploying this year? I was down in OKC.
