  • Anyone have details on the J6 field?

I have been looking for an Information Technology/ Information Specialist occupation within the California ARNG, and I was referred by the division chief Of the 223rd MI (L) BN to look into the J6 field as an IS(information Specialist). All I know about this field is that I'm required to go 25Bravo beforehand. I have three questions.

    1. Does anyone know how I join a specific field and batallion?

    2. What kind of training/schooling is required (if any) to join J6 once I've completed my AIT to become a 25B?

    3. Does anyone have any details about the J6 field itself?

    Here's a section of the E-mail I recieved regarding J6 Employment.

"Subject: RE: Target MOS for J6 employment?

    Good morning,

The J6/G6 IT field typically looks for soldiers holding a 25B or 25U MOS on the Army side and a 3C or 3D on the Air side for a computer specialist. 25V (Army) or 3N (Air) are the video related MOS."

Sounds like you are on track to me. Most of the J6 guys in my state belong to our Signal batallion. There are a few that have a random MOS that is not 25B/25U but bring civilian IT experience to the table instead.

      Thanks QuantumRN,

I didn't understand if it was it was an actual MOS that I would have to bid for or not. At what time do I get to choose My field, and is it something I can secure before I ship to BCT/AIT?

At the risk of oversimplification, "J6" is effectively a unit (or a section of a larger unit), whereas "25B" or "25U" is an MOS or job. That message you received is a bit accidentally misleading for someone new.

Re: Anyone have details on the J6 field?

Hmmm. The easiest way to explain J6 is that it is mainly comprised of dual status federal technicians. It basically is a federal job that requires you to wear a uniform (maintain military membership) and to acquire a position there must be 1) an opening or posted job announcement 2) applicant must meet a MOS requirement or have the civilian equivalent of experience. Working in the 6 shop is nothing you can get in your contract. You just have to apply once you are MOSQed.
          Hope that helped.

Thanks for the insight, that definately cleared up my confusion. The E-mail I revieved only had the short description I showed you and a link describing the occupation, but sadly it was linked to a military server so I was S.O.L
