  • Prior service medals/awards/badges

    Hello all,

I have the following listed on my DD-214 from the USAF:

    1) Air force training ribbon
    2) Kosovo Campaign medal
    3) National defense service medal
    4) Air Force outstanding Unit award with 1 oak leaf cluster

I also had a badge that we wore based on our career field called the basic maintenance badge, link is here:

These were worn 1 inch about our ribbons.

Which of these am I authorized to wear while in the army guard?

My guess would be 2 & 3. The ones that are branch specific don't always convert over (I know, I know... some do like the USMC good conduct that some Amry guys wear).

As for the badge. Nope. Sorry.

In accordance with Chapter 29 of AR 670-1, Wear and Appearance of the Army Uniform, you can wear all four of the ribbons on the Army uniform.

Para 29-6 b allows the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award

Para 29-6 d allows the Air Force Training ribbon with the following verbiage:

"Personnel may wear service medals and service and training ribbons awarded by other U.S. Services on the Army uniform"

Para 26-6 d (11) allows National Defense Service Medal

Para 26-6 d (19) allows the Kosovo Campaign Medal

Para 29-13 g (3) specifically prohibits your Air Force occupational specialty badge (good call jmclaughlin1701)

"Badges from other U.S. Services that indicate career fields are not authorized for wear, such as USAF medical insignia, or badges used to identify the duty, function, or classification of the wearer. Some examples are USAF fire protection, air training command instructor, security police, or the Naval aviation warfare specialist."

        Re: Prior service medals/awards/badges

Wow! That's some clear and concise stuff. I greatly appreciate it. I was awarded the two outstanding unit awards for participation, so they were listed on my DD-214, rather than being temporary.

        Thanks for the help.

            thanks Mistake!

I read that regulation and it looks like I can also wear my civilian medal. I got the Commanders Award for Civilian Service last year as a Brigade S2, and it's an actual medal that was pinned.

Never saw this before, but during uniform inspection one of our NCOs had a pin on his Class A uniform. Was small, circular, with a gold star in the middle. Not sure what it's called, but he was authorized to wear it because his son was killed in Iraq.

                Re: Prior service medals/awards/badges

Ah the ribbon looks like an Army commendation medal except theres only two white stripes in the middle instead of 4, the reg says they're basically the equivalent.

That USAF distinguished unit award is going to look really goofy on the right side next to the larger ribbons with frames

It's the "Gold Star" award. They are given to surviving family members of personnel who gave it all....

Shake that guys hand. You, me and the rest of the country owe him.

Same here. The JMUC has a much larger gold frame in the Army version. Wait until you try to find a ribbon rack that allows two bordered unit ribbons, one on top of the other. They don't fit.
