  • NEW GI Bill CH 1606 question

I have searched everywhere and cannot find an answer to a question I was asked by one of my potential GRAP's. I know it is a 6 year obligation to be eligible for GI Bill.

Can someone enlist for 3 years (understanding they won't get the GI Bill) and if they decide to extend another 3 years, totaling 6 consecutive years, will they then qualify for Ch 1606? Or is it a one time initial/re-enlistment 6 year contract?

Basically is it one-6 years contract or can it be two-3 years consecutive to qualify?

Re: NEW GI Bill CH 1606 question

You need to have 6 years pending on your contract to take the 1606. In other words, if you enlist for 3 years, serve two, then sign up for 1606, you will obligate for another 6 years.
