  • Wanting a AGR postion what MOS to pick?

Well i have to wait until november to join because of medical issues at meps but i want to stay with a local unit instead of driving far. I will be joining the guard in ky and the two mos jobs im interested in is 13f and 15g. I am wanting to land a agr postion and make it a career any input would be great thanks.

Find out if your state posts the AGR opening online CLOSER to the time that your going to graduate (won't be able to apply until once your in the guard). As a PV1, PV2, PFC, ADSW jobs are up your alley, just try to get long-term orders instead of week to week orders. job security is great. Can always go onlien now and get an idea of what your state offers tho

Those are VERY different MOSs. You need to do a lot more thinking about what you're trying to do before you move forward. Are you aware of where the units are for those two MOSs? Are you aware of the upward mobility with each of those MOSs?

As far as AGR... you are in the wrong place in your career to even be thinking about that. That is not even going to be an option until you're an NCO. Honestly the easiest routes to an AGR position are from 42A, supply, or recruiting.

The guard is not a full-time job. If you're looking to make the Army a full-time career then you need to go to active duty. You can't have it both ways. AGR is not a viable goal for you at this point. It won't be for a long time, and even then it will be extremely difficult to land.

On a Side note, check into the Technician side of the NG in your state. There is alot more options for this than AGR. They seem to always be looking for Mechanics, Small Arms repair, Supply, all types of fix it guys, etc.. They keep the NG moving, but dont get that much praise for it.

Funny you should mention this. I had one of the mechanics practically begging me to come be a Tech at the shop next to my Armory. Until I warned him that if I touched a wrench and any of the machines, they would probably explode in a horrible fireball.

So I can certainly testify to this statement.

A lot of our parachute riggers work as techs and work full time. The beautiful thing is that tech pay isn't based on the military scale, and my friend who is an E-4 comes home with a lot more than E-4 pay. It's not as "stable" as AGR (but no job is).

If you're looking AGR, either wait till you're a promotable E-4 and become a recruiter or go into the administration or supply field I would say, but really it all depends. There's something for everyone in AGR. Also check your state's posting.

So i could go in as a 15g and then apply for a tech postion? Or can anyone apply for a tech postion. Do they still have to wear a uniform everyday?

Yes, they do wear uniforms. Is 15G some kinda aviation? I have a buddy who fixes blackhawks everyday as a tech.

Yes a 15g is a Aircraft Structural Repairer. I didnt know what mos would help me a 15g or 13f. Is a tech position full time and permanent postion?

Re: Wanting a AGR postion what MOS to pick?

You're a full time federal technician that wears the army uniform essentially.

Typically, they require experience and skill though...not just an MOS on paper. But there are even tech positions for working in warehouses/operating forklifts (Materials Handlers.)

Here's some examples from the IA Guard.

If you want to try for an aviation tech job you would probably be better off getting a 15T or 15U MOS. At my unit in Montana we have one 15G full time tech, there are a lot more 15T and 15U techs, at least five of each. You do not have to be MOSQ to get a tech job, but it really helps, especially in todayís job market. The supply tech jobs seem to be the easiest to get, however they usually pay less. One of the soldiers in my unit was working a supply job, and holds an aviation MOS, and he said most of his coworkers were not in supply MOSís. The higher paying tech jobs such as aviation techs, and vehicle mechanic positions usually want you to have some experience, so donít expect to get out of AIT and walk right into a tech job. It does happen, but not that often.
There are full time permanent tech jobs, and temporary tech jobs. The temp jobs are typically there to fill in for a permanent tech who is deployed or at school. Getting a temp job is a good way to get your foot in the door. Temps donít qualify for benefits or retirement, but get paid the same and work the same hours.

why don't you just join the Army? I'm saying this guessing Activefirst is not available in this MOS. Go regular Army in your favorite MOS, then 6 years later, you can pick your favorite, Guard or Army.

You might love the Army enough to stay in.

you really should get a good idea of whats available on a reg basis and then pick an mos that will help you land a tech job, here in iowa there are jobs moving stuff in the warehouse and they still start out at 17.28 an hour, people use those to make connections to get hired at one of the shops, there are alot of military technicians and they don't all use wrenches

There's usually only a couple 15Gs in a given BN. Long term you would most likely reclass in a mechanic MOS. For a tech job doing that, you would need years of experience.

Understand that the full-time staff at a guard unit is a skeleton crew in which each individual has the knowledge of & is doing the work of dozens & dozens of part-time folks. A new troop right out of AIT is in learning mode. They don't do anything without someone over their shoulder. The folks you'll see turning wrenches at a flight facility have been doing that specialty for many years, and are theoretically really hot stuff at what they do & need almost no help or supervision to do very complex stuff on a daily basis.

Across at the unit, especially in aviation line companies, they don't have authorized slots for a readiness NCO or supply sgt. The readiness is a PSG over crew chiefs, which means they have that chew chief MOS. The supply sgt is normally an E5/6 in a TI/PC type slot. In both cases they picked up the admin/supply MOS as a secondary so they could come on AGR. The bigger companies will have authorized slots for supply sgts. The HHC readiness is normally going to be a 15P.

Your best bet normally is going to be going with the MOS that there's a lot of in your unit. That means faster promotions & more opportunities.

Again, if you're looking for a full-time career you need to go to active duty. If you're looking for a full-time paycheck anywhere close to when you get back from AIT, you need to go to active duty. Full-time gigs in the guard are very few and far between. There's a handful of lower enlisted we're able to bring on temp-tech or ADOS orders, but those are 6mo tours at best, and ONLY if we have money which we mostly don't. There's normally dozens of folks wanting those jobs and maybe a couple we can hire a year if we're lucky. Being in the right place at the right time works out well for that.
