  • Prior-service possible re-up questions

Hi, Team. I've been enjoying looking through old posts. Seems like there are a lot of folks who pop in for a question or two, and a small but dedicated cadre of folks who hang out here. I'm digging it.

So here's my story. Did 9 years in the Reserve and Guard as a 92Y. I picked an MOS that my parents would feel comfortable with, which I now feel was a mistake. I did have some cool experiences and got to do some fun stuff, so I guess I can't complain too much. However, a couple of years in to my time in the Guard I developed something of an attitude with regard to PT. I got lazy and didn't feel like putting the time into it because I thought it wasn't "my thing." BIG mistake, I know...I've grown up a lot since then. I loved being a soldier, just hated the PT. So, embarrassing as it is to say, I left the military after 9 years (would have been 8 but got deployed a month before my ETS date) as an E-3. My RE code is "1," so I know I'm not barred from reenlistment.

I've been out for 7 years now. The reason I got out was because my wife was pregnant with our third child, and we decided at the time that it was best for me to belong 100% to my family, not the Guard. Now that the kids are older, I find myself wanting to reenlist more and more. In fact, not a day goes by where I don't think about it, not to mention that I'm practically half-way to retirement. But I want to make sure that I have as much information as possible before I start talking about it with my wife, since in the past she's turned "I'd really like to rejoin the military" into "I AM rejoining the military." So I have some questions, and I've tried to find as many answers in search as possible before asking here.

    1) Since getting out, I've gotten my Bachelor's Degree. I remember when I first enlisted, people who had college degrees could enter as E-4. Would it be possible for me to enter as that as well?

And if not (because of the PT thing), would taking a PT test count towards anything? I'm actually in better shape now than I was when I was in the Guard. Of course I totally understand if I go in as what I was and then work up from there.

    2) If I do the Try-One program, do I have to keep my MOS, or could I reclass? I'd prefer to do something like infantry, FO or maybe combat engineer or cav scout (my state has all of those types of units). Would I have to join a unit in my current MOS and request reclass?

Also, when I initially enlisted, 92Y and 12B were the only MOSs available to me (aside from laundry and bath specialist...come on), which I'm assuming is because of whichever local units had openings at that time. Now that I'm already a qualified soldier, would I potentially have more options in terms of MOS choices?

    3) If I were to reclass, is it common for people in my situation (prior service reenlisting/reclassing) to attend the full AIT, or would it be an accelerated course? Example, when I was in my field artillery unit, they were offering 13B school to non-13Bs, which would be conducted in lieu of drill weekends and AT. It's not that I don't want to do the real training...I'm fine with leaving for extended training. Just trying to suss out my options.

    Thanks for your time!

    Re: Prior-service possible re-up questions

Are you aware of the upcoming reductions? That prior service have limited options at this time? Someone may correct me on this but I believe the Army Reserves are currently better with prior service recruiting. Which recruiters you have talked to? I am on my way to Vegas and using an iPhone so excuse the writing.
