  • ROTC to Guard Question

I will be starting ROTC in the fall at college. I understand that by the end of your junior year you have to decide which branch you want to go into (i.e. Active, Reserve, Guard), but do you have rank them in order of which you would like and hope to get into the branch you want, or can I simply have a guaranteed contact in the guard?

If my question was complicated, I'm asking if I have a change to be put in the Army Reserves, or if when I decide to contact I can simply contract with the Guard.

    Re: ROTC to Guard Question

Your State's Officer Strength Manager (OSM) may write you an assignment letter as early as your MSIII year. This is not a formal legal contract, however. You will have better results the earlier you contact the OSM, and make arrangements. You will have more influence over your pinpoint assignment in the Guard than in the active component.
