  • Can Officers switch from Army National Guard to Army Reserve ?

I am interested in going to OCS for the Guard.
I believe that the contract is for 6 yrs or 8 if I get SLRP.
I wanted to know if I could switch to the Army Reserve after 3 or 4 years.
I am interested in a Civil Affairs unit in the Reserves after some time in the Guard.

Short answer is yes. You would need to be released into the IRR and then can transfer into the USAR, with the hardest part being released by your state. I would not recommend it if you're nearing a promotion as your records will not easily transfer over. Also, if you get the officer accession bonus, this may cause you problems as well.

Because you cant go into Civil Affairs as a O1 and in the Guard I have more units close to me that I am interested in both Infantry and MI.

I am not sure if I would try switching but wanted to know if it is possible.

        Thanks
