    majtjf, thanks for the clarification. I especially like the part about some of that money actually helping the newly minted O-1s pay for their actual Army uniforms. That makes sense. The interesting part of this comes if or when the new officer decides to make a career of big Army. In the example I provided an enlisted man who attends the Point after three years AD could serve the minimum time of 17 years to get his 20 and then retire, at age 42.(start USMA at age 21, finish at age 25, serve 17 years AD, retire at 42.)

    Interestingly, this is the exact same age that someone would be if he went straight to the Point right after high school, because he would have to serve the full 20, after getting his gold bar at age 22. (22+20 = 42)

    So, I guess it's kind of like LTC Ritchie's post, 2nd chances are possible. If you don't get in right after high school, go on AD and try again.
