  • Religious Servies

I know they have religious services on Sundays at Basic Training but I was wondering what denomination these are?

Also, I will be at Basic Traning in September and I was wondering if they have services for Yom Kippur (I am Jewish) and it is the holiest of holidays. I am assuming I will not be allowed to fast or be excused from anything, I certainly will not ask or expect to be, and I am fine with it in this circumstance, but am curious how this is handled via services, if at all.

    Thanks!

You will be allowed religious services for your faith. When I was in BCT we had almost a dozen to choose from. They were helf throughout the day on Sunday and I think one was on Friday too.

No sure about Yom Kippur though.

I went to church in basic, but we only talked about the army, looked at army slides and sang army songs.

For awhile in BCT we were only allowed to go to one service, and it was a Christian service of some sort (I don't remember the exact denomination) that the DS escorted us to. We eventually earned the privilege to march ourselves to whatever service we signed up for (they had everything at FLW; Jewish, LDS, Buddhist, Muslim, ********, etc.), but it wasn't right away. I'm sure it depends on your company and post, but that was my experience. I can only assume that you will not be allowed to attend services unless they're on Sunday, but again, it depends, I'm sure.

If it's something you're really concerned about you can try to speak to your DS's about it. One female in my company was allowed to sing in an on-post church choir in the evenings on rare occasions during our AIT because she spoke to a DS about it.

How odd! Haha. It's a Christian religion headed by a pope, starts with Cath...

            Haha.

Hmm curious, can I go to a different religions service every week? It would be fun to go to the muslim one but I don't want to be profiled by the Intelligence MOS's on my record lol.

                edit:

                ********

                edit again:

Wow it is blurred out, that's awesome.

Yes, you can pick whichever religious service you want to go to, and you can try a different one every week if you're so inclined. A few recruits in my OSUT did that, and I picked the Buddhist service even though I'm not Buddhist (or religious at all). I have one DS jokingly ask me if they gave us donuts and lickeys and chewies at Buddhist service, because there was no other reason in her mind as to why I'd be going to an "odd" service. I know in our company you had to convince at least one other soldier to go with you as a battle buddy, which was sometimes difficult for those that wanted to go to the less mainstream services, but it usually worked out.
