  • New Requirement Changes per Army Times

Ok, there are changes or whatnot that were approved by Congress just a couple of weeks ago that was published in the Army Times.

I started my military career on active duty for just over 4 years, then had a break in service a couple of years, then have been army national guard since about 2000. So in all, I am at about 16-17 years total service.

I understand that they have brought back, or extended, etc. the previous programs from the 90's. I want to take part in them, or at least find out more information regarding such, but cannot find anything on google, military.com, or AKO.

I have also heard different things from different people who actually have retired before, so I need to confirm these:

    1. you start getting your retirement day 1 after you retire from military
    2. you don't get anything until age 60-whatever.

(i think i have figured out that the difference is your status - national guard/reserves vs active the whole time, which determines when you get your checks to start coming in but just want it confirmed)

I am mainly looking for that $30k bonus upon exiting the military and reduction in retirement pay at age 60-whatever.

    Please advise.

Yes, congress authorized 15 year retirements (which should apply to AD with 15 years AFS). Now we have to wait on how and if the Army (as well as the other branches) will implement it.

Is this, essentially, the way the Army is planning to draw down?

New rules that affect retirement age. This now covers disaster relief.
