  • ROTC possible with distance learning Master's program?

I've searched up and down the forums here and at Military.com and haven't been able to find an answer to this question. Is it possible to participate in ROTC (doing PT and classes at a local university) while completing a distance-learning online Master's degree? The degree program would be from an accredited (but not local) school - I am applying to Georgia Tech, Purdue, Illinois, etc. for a MS in Engineering.

I appreciate any insight, thank you in advance.

Here is a list of "ways to attend" ROTC. You should look through and see if you could work any of them out to your benefit http://www.goarmy.com/rotc/ways-to-attend.html

Thank you for the reply. I would be eligible as a graduate student with two years remaining (as the link above describes), but I do not know if there are any rules that would prevent distance classes from being eligible or if there was a residency requirement for the graduate program. That's what I am hoping to clarify. Thanks!

ROTC is built around resident students at a traditional college. The very nature of distance learning makes participation in ROTC impossible. ROTC comprises more than merely academic knowledge (although that is a component). The program of instruction relies heavily on praxis and experiential knowledge, which one can only find in a collective training environment.

You may wish to consider a traditional enlistment, followed by OCS after a year or two.

I found this forum that had the same question you posed and a good answer was that if you were taking hybrid classes; then you would probably qualify. But they did mention 75% of your coursework has to be residency.
