  • How does school affect your contract length?

I am a freshman in college, and am thinking about joining the National Guard. However, if I sign on while still in school, does my time in school count towards my contract time? Or does that not start until I graduate? (e.g. after signing an eight year contract, after graduation in three years do I still have eight years to serve, or just five?)

Your time starts after you swear in. Training attendance will be expected of you immediately. There is no swear in now, begin years later.

Your time starts when you formally enlist, although you have opportunities to extend your obligation for taking promotions, schools, incentives, and changes in status. For example, if you enlist in college, complete ROTC, and commission four years later, you will incur a new obligation on commissioning day. See the link in my signature block for some details.
