  • Flight medic questions

I have tried googling as much as I can and cant seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. So hear goes for anyone who can help....I am a current United States Marine (E-5) and am due to EAS in a month. I am also currently certified as an EMT Intermediate and would like to continue on as a flight medic in the Guard. I know that there is an aviation unit in Virginia near richmond that i could possibly join but dont know if they are an air ambulance or medevac unit. ????.. Also I cant seem to figure out how my current certifications will help me other than possibly lessening the amount of time that i spend at 68w school????..?? Im working with my recruiter but would like to hear from members of the guard that dont have "invested interest" (if you get my drift). Also i was wondering if I get to come in as an E-5 or if I will have to loose my rank. Any help would be great. Thanks for reading and for your service.

    Re: Flight medic questions

Well I can answer a few of your questions since I'm a prior USMC Corporal turned Medic.

    1) "Will I be a flight medic" - It really depends on your state and if your aviation unit has slots for them. We have an aviation unit here, but ZERO flight medics so it all depends on your state. Hopefully your recruiter has some insight on those slots and he's not trying to play you.

    2) "What can I do with my EMT-I, will it shorten my time at 68w school" - You'll skip the EMT phase which is the first half of 68W school, but you'll still be required to do the combat medic portion. So basically instead of 3-4 months you'll cut that in half.

    3) "Will I keep my rank" - Maybe, that's for the guard to decide. On the flip side there may not be ANY E-5 68W positions open in your state so you might have to come in as an E-4 (Specialist) or you're SOL till something opens up.

Any other Q's just pm me.

    -J

FYI every unit I have talk to won't even consider you unless your civilian occupation deals with medicine. However each unit is different. Good luck!

Although you may be EMT-I qualified, you may not have an ASVAB score high enough to become a medic. As far as becoming a flight medic, If your stats has no MEDEVAC or air ambulance unit, then NO you will just be a plain old whiskey.
